Location: Primarily Remote (with monthly on-site days in Hastings, MI)
Schedule: Full-time | Monday-Friday | 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
About the Role:

As an Accountant on our Financial Services team, you'll be responsible for preparing and analyzing financial data across multiple business areas, from premiums and investments to taxes and reinsurance. You'll collaborate with colleagues, auditors, and regulators to ensure our reporting meets statutory and GAAP standards. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to both corporate financial management and the stewardship of our charitable foundation.
What You'll Do:
  • Prepare, review, analyze, and maintain financial data in accordance with statutory accounting principles, GAAP, and management guidelines.
  • Post journal entries and verify general ledger accuracy for audits conducted by external firms, regulators, and internal personnel.
  • Research and prepare control reports to support management in communicating financial results to the Board, policyholders, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop financial highlights and presentations for Board of Directors meetings.
  • File required reports with the NAIC and regulatory bodies at city, state, and federal levels.
  • Manage cash to maximize investments and profitability through timely transfers and calculations.
  • Support corporate planning, ratings (AM Best, Weiss), and Management's Discussion and Analysis.
  • Identify and report unusual financial activity, account variances, and ethical concerns.
  • Conduct financial comparisons, prepare statutory assessments, and participate in company-wide projects.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to company personnel as needed.
  • Review monthly reconciliations and maintain organized historical accounting records.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and self-improvement.

  • Hybrid schedule: weekly in-office presence at Hastings, MI headquarters, plus remote flexibility.
What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field (equivalent experience may be considered).
  • Statutory insurance accounting experience highly preferred.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude and calculator proficiency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other PC-based tools.
