Security Officer Position

This position provides a safe and secure working environment for patients, employees, and Wyoming State Hospital visitors.

Essential functions include:

  • Respond to medical emergencies and security calls involving patients and staff. Situations may require the use of CPR and/or an AED.
  • Perform surveillance by patrolling, and assist as needed by vehicle or on foot.
  • Conduct monthly and quarterly fire drills, evaluate and document each area's performance during the drill, and participate in briefings afterward to suggest ways to become more efficient and identify what may have been done incorrectly.
  • Maintain safety equipment
  • Transportation of staff and other individuals
  • Respond to patient behavior emergencies and assume a lead role for difficult, aggressive, or combative patient behaviors.
  • Assist local law enforcement with emergency detentions
  • Train staff in the use of mechanical restraints
  • Ensure staff and visitors obey stop signs and speed limits, and it acts as a deterrent to would-be trespassers.
  • Respond to client behavior emergencies and assume a lead role for difficult, aggressive, or combative patient behaviors.
  • Fingerprint new employees
  • Conduct daily security checks on facility buildings and surrounding state property
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of security procedures, ability to accurately write reports and document information, state and local laws pertaining to trespassing, skills in verbal and written communication, ability to respond appropriately in crisis situations, and the skills to interact with local emergency response personnel are required.

Minimum qualifications include an associate's degree, typically in criminal justice, and 0-1 year of progressive work experience as a security guard with the acquired knowledge at the level of a security escort. Certificates, licenses, or registrations may be required.

Physical working conditions include the ability to stand for long periods, physical ability to lift, twist, bend, pull, and push up to 50 lbs, work in a variety of locations and conditions and on a variety of surfaces, and ability to perform CPR, crisis management, and utilize proper practices in infection control and defensive driving.
