The Unarmed Security Guard plays a vital role in maintaining internal safety, order, and compliance in support of DHS/ICE’s mission to detain, process, and ensure the welfare of single adult detainees at a temporary detention facility. This role is responsible for detainee supervision, access control, facility safety protocols, and supporting internal escort and monitoring activities—without the use of firearms. Duties must be carried out in accordance with ICE’s National Detention Standards 2019 (NDS 2019), DHS PREA (6 CFR Part 115), and applicable federal, state, and local laws.

The Unarmed Security Guard plays a vital role in maintaining internal safety, order, and compliance in support of DHS/ICE’s mission to detain, process, and ensure the welfare of single adult detainees at a temporary detention facility. This role is responsible for detainee supervision, access control, facility safety protocols, and supporting internal escort and monitoring activities—without the use of firearms. Duties must be carried out in accordance with ICE’s National Detention Standards 2019 (NDS 2019), DHS PREA (6 CFR Part 115), and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Control access to non-critical facility areas, check credentials, and direct detainees, staff, and visitors appropriately.
- Monitor detainee activity in housing units, recreation yards, intake, and visitation areas.
- Assist in escorting detainees within facility grounds (non-secure areas) under supervision of armed officers.
- Conduct routine visual inspections and pat-downs and monitor for violations of facility rules.
- Report disturbances or rule violations immediately to supervisors; assist in verbal de-escalation tactics.
- Support safety inspections, enforce facility cleanliness standards, and ensure PPE and hygiene compliance.
- Maintain accurate logs of detainee movement, incidents, and facility checks.
- Enforce facility rules, maintain order, and support a safe, humane environment in line with ICE standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
- U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (subject to DHS screening criteria).
- High school diploma or GED.
- 6 months to 1 year of experience in security, corrections, military, or detention preferred
- Must pass DHS/ICE background investigation (Standard Form 85P and ICE security vetting process).
- Ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, and restrain detainees if necessary without the use of weapons.
- English fluency required, Spanish proficiency a plus.
- Strong verbal de-escalation, observation, and report-writing skills.
- Must complete PREA training, NDS 2019 overview, facility orientation, and CPR/First Aid certification.
- Required to work rotating shifts (days, swings, overnights) including weekends and holidays.
- Must operate in a controlled environment with high levels of detainee interaction.
- Position is designated under PREA standards (6 CFR
- 115.117) and includes enhanced screening.
- Must comply with DHS Trusted Workforce 2.0 continuous vetting policy.
- Experience working in an immigration detention, jail, or corrections environment.
- Familiarity with ICE NDS 2019 standards or DHS detention operations.
- Training in verbal judo, trauma-informed care, or crisis intervention.
