Perform the maintenance, inspection, and repair of electrical wiring systems and equipment, street lighting, lighting services in parks, playgrounds, and parking lots, lighting for public services and in public buildings, and the installation and maintenance of the traffic control system throughout the City. This position assures regular work and requires only local travel within the City of West Allis. Examples of Duties
Installs, modifies, repairs, loads, and tests wiring, conduit circuits, outlets, fixtures, switches, switchboards, panel boards, transformers, and other equipment and devices in the size, type, and arrangement needed for proper and safe operations; tests, repairs, or replaces components of defective or worn out equipment such as motors, generators, storage batteries, and timing devices; performs preventive maintenance tasks including inspection, cleaning, oiling, and adjusting electrically operated systems, equipment, and devices, and locates underground cables as part of Diggers Hotline Network. Troubleshoots cable systems, locates shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalance or cable breaks using test devices like voltmeter, ohmmeter, megger, and thumper; strings and pulls wires; installs and pulls underground cables; splices and connects wires; maintains streetlight poles, bases, luminaires, beacon lights on water towers, and inspects transformers, switches, and cables. Operates and repairs low voltage control cabinets, sketches circuits, estimates costs, and requisitions materials. Supports initiatives such as strategic planning, LEAN, and innovation. Maintains prompt attendance, provides accurate communication, and can testify in court. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supports planning and layout using building plans, blueprints, diagrams, and manuals; recommends process improvements; maintains safety and operational standards; and ensures legal operation of vehicles. Performs duties in high places, confined spaces, and alongside traffic, exercising sound judgment and adaptability.
Qualifications include availability for nights, weekends, overtime, and emergency responses. Education requirements are a high school/trade school diploma or equivalent, completion of an electrical apprenticeship, and five or six years of recent paid experience as a journeyman or equivalent. Must be competent with office software, complete NIMS ICS-100 and 700 within 6 months, and possess valid Wisconsin driver’s license. Certification as a Journeyman or Master Electrician is required depending on the level. Knowledge of electrical principles, safety practices, blueprints, and estimation is essential. Ability to work in various environments, establish effective relationships, and promote continuous improvement is necessary.
Rules regarding the up to $2500 sign-on bonus:
- Employee cannot currently be employed by the City of West Allis.
- The bonus is contingent on qualifications and experience.
