Overview

Electrician role at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs — Veterans Health Administration (VHA) at the Sepulveda and West Los Angeles Medical Center Campuses (Engineering Service).

Responsibilities

  • Working independently with responsibility for determining proper work methods and techniques to use in accomplishing assigned, scheduled and emergency tasks.
  • Working from oral/written instructions, specifications, blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and sketches.
  • Estimating material, tools, and equipment necessary for each assignment.
  • Ordering material, tools, equipment, and services by compiling a rough draft containing information for procurement.
  • Completing installations, modifications, and repairs, and loans and test systems, circuits, equipment, and controls with little or no check during the progress or upon completion of work.
  • Checking the overall work to see that it meets accepted trade standards.
  • Deciding on the types and sizes of conduit, wiring, relays, distribution panels, and other electrical devices proper for the work, and arranging, installing, and repairing a variety of complete electrical systems as well as any parts of the systems.

Physical Requirements

Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 9 kg (20 pounds) and, less often, up to 18 kg (40 pounds). Occasionally, heavier objects may weigh more than 18 kilograms, requiring assistance.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the work. Evidence demonstrating knowledge, skills, and ability must be supported by detailed descriptions in your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations. You will receive credit for qualifying experience including volunteer experience.
