Summary: The position is located in the Facility Management Department of the Facility Support Directorate at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois. The Lovell Center is a system of facilities throughout Northeastern Illinois providing medical and dental services to U.S. Military Veterans, Recruits, Active Duty, and eligible beneficiaries.

Duties

  • Work covers the installations, modifications, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and repair of electrical wiring, circuits, control systems and associated fixtures in healthcare, industrial, institutional, office, and residential building applications. Disassembles malfunctioning electrical equipment, repairs and/or replaces defective parts and components, cleans and reassembles.
  • Conducts inspections, operational tests and analysis of electrical systems and/or equipment as directed.
  • Work on high voltage lines and equipment specific to switching cut out switches, replacing fuses or circuit breakers, and clean up and preventive maintenance of transformers and termination pedestals. Knowledge and application of electrical principles, materials, and safety standards for 600 Volts & below (low-voltage) and greater than 600 Volts (high-voltage) as applicable.
  • Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams and schematics, engineering drawings, electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and layout the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines and devices. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections, and installs wiring, couplings, conduits, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances.
  • Installing, modifying, repairing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, electro-mechanical equipment, and other electrical equipment. Plans and lays out work, traces defects, and completes repairs and installations.
  • Keeps track of inventory, tools, and equipment assigned to them, safeguarding such material and ensuring continuous accountability. Maintains the useful life of tools and equipment through cleaning, lubrication, painting, safety adjustments, etc. Adheres to OSHA guidelines and promotes safety practices.
  • During periods of excessive snow, may operate snow removal equipment; may work odd hours and overtime during severe weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

The work requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. May work from ladders and scaffolding. May operate equipment with vibrations and jerking. Ability to lift parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds, and up to 40 pounds less frequently. Occasionally lift or move heavier objects with assistance.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. This position requires a Driver's License. Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of this position. Applicants will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
