Overview
Position: Human Resources Generalist at August Mack Environmental, Inc. Location: Indianapolis, IN; Onsite (remote/hybrid based on experience). Employment Type: Full-time; Exempt; Department: Human Resources; Reports To: Director of Human Resources; Direct Reports: None; Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (core hours 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM).
Responsibilities
- The HR Generalist serves as a trusted advisor to employees and provides support in core HR functions.
- This role enhances onboarding by developing and conducting orientation training sessions, ensuring a seamless experience for new hires.
- Processes payroll, addresses employee inquiries, and resolves discrepancies promptly.
- Administers benefits, including open enrollment and qualifying life events, and responds to employee questions.
- Provides general HR support, handles employee and manager inquiries and requests, and manages offboarding procedures.
- Design, update, and facilitate engaging orientation sessions to ensure a smooth and informative onboarding experience for new hires.
- Collaborate with managers to document and implement structured onboarding plans that align with departmental goals.
- Conduct regular check-ins with new hires, gather feedback, and refine onboarding processes to enhance employee integration.
- Process biweekly multi-state payroll, including merits, bonuses, stipends, prevailing wage adjustments, shift differential, and year-end tax forms.
- Review new state and local tax jurisdictions setup to ensure compliance with evolving regulatory requirements and respond to and resolve payroll tax notices from federal, state, and local agencies.
- Review wage garnishments and support orders in accordance with legal requirements to ensure accurate deductions and remittances.
- Resolve payroll discrepancies promptly and respond to employee inquiries with accuracy and professionalism.
- Implement system enhancements and process improvements to increase payroll efficiency and compliance.
- Lead the planning and execution of annual Open Enrollment events and related employee communications in ADP.
- Manage benefit enrollments, qualifying life events, leaves, terminations, COBRA, and prepare required census reports.
- Support employees by answering benefit-related questions and enhancing benefit systems and processes through continuous improvement.
- Provide general HR support by processing HR requests, managing offboarding procedures, and mentoring junior HR staff.

Job Specifications
- Education: B.S. in human resources
- Experience: 2-3+ years of HR generalist experience, including recruitment, onboarding, payroll processing, benefits administration, and employee engagement.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Foundational understanding of core HR laws and regulations, including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, COBRA, and other federal and state labor laws.
- Working knowledge of HRIS platforms, preferably ADP Workforce Now, for tracking employee data, payroll processing, benefits administration, onboarding, offboarding, and processing employee requests.
- Effective communication skills and ability to clearly convey information to employees and managers verbally, in writing, and via presentation.
- Detail-oriented with ability to accurately process payroll, benefits administration, and general HR requests.
- Effective time management with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple HR processes simultaneously.
- Ability to build effective relationships, establish trust, and collaborate with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee information with discretion and integrity.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer (up to 8 hours per day).
- Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, or reach for tasks such as filing and setting up orientation.
- Manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment, including computers, printers, copiers, and telephones.
- Visual acuity to read and interpret documents, spreadsheets, and computer screens.
- Hearing and speech clarity for in-person meetings, phone conversations, presentations, and training sessions.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
