ABOUT THE POSITION
The HR Generalist oversees human resources functions while fostering a supportive, equitable, and legally compliant workplace. This position will serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations and HR strategy across a variety of staff groups, including full and part-time administrative staff, artists, musicians, teaching artists, and union employees.
The ideal candidate is both strategic and hands-on, with a passion for people-centered work and a strong understanding of nonprofit and/or performing arts environments.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Human Resources Strategy & Operations
- Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies and procedures in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local labor laws (including Washington State-specific regulations)
- Manage and execute full employee lifecycle: recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, and offboarding
- Administer compensation and benefits, and manage relationships with third-party platforms (e.g. Paycom)
- Maintain accurate employee records and oversee HRIS systems
- Employee and Labor Relations: Serve as a key resource and trusted advisor to employees and managers for questions, concerns, and support for conflict resolution
- Facilitate timely, effective resolution of employee concerns while maintaining confidentiality and compliance
- Support and guide managers on performance management, documentation, and team communication
- Partner with leadership to foster a collaborative and inclusive organizational culture
- Union experience a plus: Collaborate with leadership on union relations, including administration of collective bargaining agreements and handling of grievances
- Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure organizational compliance with employment laws, workplace safety standards, and HR best practices. File and manage submission of related data and filings
- Maintain up-to-date employee handbook and organizational policies
- Lead HR training on key topics for employees
- Create and maintain processes for employee documentation
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in Human Resources, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or related field
- 4+ years of progressive HR experience, ideally within a nonprofit, arts, or mission-driven organization
- Strong working knowledge of employment law and HR practices, especially in Washington State
- Experience working with unionized employees and/or collective bargaining agreements preferred
- Demonstrated strength in employee relations, communication, and conflict resolution
- Experience with HRIS and payroll systems (e.g., Paycom)
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and collaborative leadership
COMPENSATION
Hourly rate for this position is $31.50/hr
