Reports to: Transportation Manager & Supervisor

Supervises: None

Term of Employment: 12 months

Salary: Mechanic I-59

FLSA Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school
  • One to three years of training or experience in repairs and maintenance of automotive equipment
  • Must possess or obtain a North Carolina commercial driver's license (CDL) with proper endorsements for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the DMV and pass a DOT drug and alcohol test
Essential Job Functions:
  • Examines and/or replaces mechanical components
  • Lubricates moving parts of vehicle chassis
  • Checks, adds and replaces brake and steering fluids
  • Checks, adds and changes engine oil
  • Rotates, replaces and repairs tires
  • Tests electrical systems
  • Tests repaired or replaced equipment for compliance with safety standards
  • Operates specialized power tools
  • Performs body repairs and vehicle painting
  • Does upholstery work and glass replacement
  • May operate fuel truck to fill in, as needed
  • Performs preventive maintenance (PMs) on all assigned vehicles at specified intervals per NCDPI
  • Performs 30 day monthly inspections on all assigned vehicles
  • Performs annual inspections as required by NCDMV
  • Responds to road side emergencies such as breakdowns/accidents as needed
  • Assists and inspects chartered motor-coaches for schools prior to field trips
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
Advancement to Technician Mechanic II

Employees may be promoted from Technician Mechanic I to Technician Mechanic II anytime after completion of a total of three years or related experience or training with Transportation under the following criteria:
  • TM 1's will receive semi-annual performance evaluations for up to two years. Thereafter, performance evaluations will be on an annual basis.
  • They must achieve a satisfactory or better rating on each performance for at least two successive rating periods.
  • TM 1's will demonstrate necessary aptitude and skills for basic engine, drive-train, electrical systems and braking system repairs.
  • Supervisors in TM1's chain of supervision must all agree to and sign off on the promotion recommendation.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements:

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to this job classification within Moore County Schools.

Work in this classification is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:
  • walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch
  • work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions

  • safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
