Job Summary
The Mechanic diagnoses and repairs diesel tractors, trailers and other wheeled vehicles by performing the following duties.
Job Responsibilities
- Examines and diagnoses vehicle problems, and repairs according to generally accepted methods
- Discusses extensive or difficult in-depth repairs with Terminal Manager, and/or Supervisor
- Demonstrates and enforces CEMEX safety policies and regulations to all mechanics (i.e., lockout tagout policies, hazard assessment)
- Ensures shop and all repairs are in compliance with OSHA regulations
- Performs routine scheduled maintenance outlined on PM checklist sheets
- Plans all routine work procedures
- Raises vehicle with hydraulic jack or hoist to access mechanical components for removal, repair or inspection
- Removes components for repair or replacement (e.g., alternators, starters, water pumps, radiators, condensers, compressors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, wheel assemblies, brakes, drivelines, gearboxes, pumps, rollers)
- Disassembles components, inspects parts for wear, and determines cause of failure
- Troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic systems and components
- Inspects and replaces parts such as clutches, wheel seals, brake linings, drums, bearings, and other components described above
- Overhauls and rebuilds serviceable components
- Some regional traveling required to repair company equipment
- Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems and circuitry to acceptable industry standards
- Performs occasional cutting and welding using gas and electric welding equipment
- Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wiper blades
- Enters work orders on system for equipment inventory purposes
- Adheres to all CEMEX, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations
- Wears proper safety equipment on plant grounds
- Meets or exceeds company safety standards
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned by management
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3 years related experience, training or equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Able to understand, interpret, communicate, and execute instructions given in both verbal and written form
- Bi-lingual Spanish a plus
- Able to recognize potentially hazardous situations and follow supervisor instructions; possesses common sense
- Ability to solve mechanical problems involving several variables in standardized situations
- Possession of valid Driver's License; prefer Class A or Class B CDL or the ability to obtain within 180 days with driving record meeting company requirements
- Forklift certified or willing to obtain
- TWIC preferred or willing to obtain
Working Conditions
- Job involves sitting most of the time, but also involves walking or standing for brief periods
Physical Requirements
- Walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing to a significant degree
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Regularly required to talk and hear to communicate with employees/visitors
