Position Summary
The Peer Support Specialist is a paraprofessional role designed for individuals with lived experience in mental health recovery or navigating social systems. At Miracle Houses Inc., Peer Support Specialists use their personal experiences to build trust, offer mentorship, and help residents feel understood and supported as they work toward greater independence and well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to residents based on shared lived experience.
- Assist residents with developing coping skills, daily routines, and goals related to housing stability, personal wellness, and self-care.
- Support residents in accessing services such as education, employment assistance, health care, and community resources.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate peer-led groups, community-building activities, and independent living skills training.
- Serve as a positive role model for recovery, personal growth, and respectful communication.
- Collaborate with staff and case managers to monitor resident progress and needs.
- Document peer interactions and support activities accurately and in a timely manner.
- Uphold confidentiality, dignity, and respect in all resident interactions.
- Participate in team meetings, supervision, and required trainings.
Qualifications
- Lived experience with mental health recovery, homelessness, or system navigation (e.g., foster care, justice system, housing instability).
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of, or willingness to complete, a Peer Support Specialist training or certification program.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain healthy boundaries and act as a role model.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and communication.
- Compassionate, nonjudgmental approach to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Work Environment
- May include some evening or weekend hours depending on program needs.
- Work takes place in a supportive housing environment and may require local travel.
