Description
The Director of the Black Cultural Center designs and administers programs and services of the Center focusing on the social, personal, and leadership development of African American students and promoting their retention and academic success. The BCC Director also works with the Director of the Woodson Center for Interracial Education and collaborates with other Centers and programs to promote interracial education and understanding for all Bereans.
Your Key Responsibilities
Provide support services and programs for African-American students, including orientation, counseling, peer mentoring, problem resolution, advocacy, and leadership development. Provide program, services, and support for African American students to enhance the quality of their educational experience and promote their academic success. With the Woodson Center Director and others, organize and sponsor programs and events promoting interracial understanding and education and emphasizing the distinct contributions and experiences of African Americans. Collaborate with Admissions in the recruitment and orientation of African American students. Many events and programs are scheduled outside of traditional work hours. A willingness to work evenings and weekends in support of students and the mission is expected. Provide oversight for The Gathering Place. Manage Center budget, space, and resources. Advise the Black Student Union, and relevant other student organizations Assess effectiveness of programs and services In support of Berea College's great commitments this position requires student supervision. The fourth great commitment is to promote learning and serving in community through the student labor program, honoring the dignity and utility of all work, mental and manual, and taking pride in work well done. The Supervision would include scheduling, assigning and approving work performed. Developing students about common workplace acumen and giving them tangible work experience is an expected outcome. Education required to ensure success in this position:
Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, or other appropriate field with emphasis on student development Experience required to ensure success in this position: 3 - 5 years leadership experience in higher education working directly with students in a multicultural or diversity affairs-related position. Experience providing program and student development services, especially for students of color
Special Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
Exemplary oral and written communication skills. Strong administrative and organizational skills. Thorough familiarity with theory, research, and practice in student engagement and success, and in multicultural understanding, especially as focused on race and interracial understanding. Ability to design and implement meaningful and high-quality co-curricular programs for students. Deep personal commitment to multicultural understanding.
