MECHANIC role at City of Taylor, Texas

Ensures that the city’s vehicles and equipment are maintained in good working condition. Duties include performing preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment.

Organizational Relationships

  • Reports to Fleet Services Superintendent.
  • This is a non-supervisory position.
  • Frequent contact with other city departments regarding services and repair of their vehicles and equipment.

Essential Duties

  • Performs preventative maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces tires.
  • Performs minor repairs which includes changing belts, hoses, windshield wipers, etc.
  • Repairs small engines and lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Transports vehicles and equipment.
  • Enters maintenance and service information in fleet software program.
  • Works outside in hot, cold, and/or wet weather.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Auto mechanics and the operation and repair of equipment.

Ability To

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Use tools effectively in repair of equipment.
  • Read and understand vehicle service manuals and lubrication charts.
  • Follow proper safety practices and procedures necessary to operate various types of equipment.
  • Interact with tact and courtesy and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with city employees and the public.
  • Maintain appropriate necessary certifications, Texas driver’s license applicable to job responsibilities, and good driving record.

Acceptable Experience And Training

  • High school graduation, or its equivalent
  • One (1) year of experience in automotive repair
  • Ability and experience in diagnosing automotive electrical issues a plus
  • Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Certificates/Licenses Required

  • Texas Class “C” Driver’s License
  • Possession of State Inspection license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date.
  • ASE Certifications Preferred
