Equipment Mechanic I

Salary: $16.83/hr. min - $24.40/hr. max (Depending on experience and certification)

The Equipment Mechanic I is responsible for the general and preventative maintenance repair to City Vehicles. General supervision is provided by the Equipment Services Senior Supervisor during the day or Equipment Services Shift Supervisor at night. All assignments are presented with detailed instructions before beginning the project.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  1. All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct & Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.
  2. Repairs and replaces defective and worn parts in City vehicles, e.g. starters, alternators, brakes, batteries, belts, hoses and tires; performs minor electrical work.
  3. Performs preventative maintenance functions including replacing oil and oil filters and performing engine tune-ups to engines. Performs State of Texas vehicle inspections.
  4. Cleans and maintains equipment and shop tools. Performs housekeeping duties. Prepares new vehicles and equipment to be placed into service.
  5. Assists with various projects as requested.
  6. Keeps track of repair times, materials and records in the FASTER fleet management System.
  7. Must furnish own hand tools.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Respond to service calls as needed; makes repairs in the field when possible; and tow vehicles when necessary.
  2. Assits other technicians in performing repairs.
  3. May modify, fabricate and install special equipment.
  4. Reseraches and stays current on new technologies.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Technical Training: May require up to 18 months of vocational education/training in automotive, Med/Heavy Truck or equipment maintenance or repair (i.e., NIASE).
  • Experience: No experience is required.
  • Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license. Obtain a Class A commercial driver's license within 6 Months of employment start date. Comply with the City of Mesquite's policy on driving. Must obtain a Texas Department of Public Safety/Emissions Inspection Certification within 6 months of hire.

Work Schedules

  • Monday-Friday, 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM (second shift) Lunch is 30 minutes.
