Overview
Operate and drive primarily log trucks, long-combination vehicles and straight-body trucks weighing over 4500 kg to transport goods and materials over long or short distances. Plan trip logistics and obtain required documentation to transport goods.
Responsibilities
- Perform pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspections of vehicle systems, equipment and accessories (tires, lights and turning signals, brakes and cold storage).
- Ensure cargo is secured properly in accordance with safety requirements and follow safety procedures for transporting dangerous goods.
- Obtain special permits and other documents required to transport cargo.
- Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption.
- Administer bills of lading and maintain log books (manual or electronic).
- Communicate with dispatcher, other drivers and customers using communication devices and on-board computers.
- May perform emergency roadside repairs and, if needed, drive as part of a two-person team or convoy.
- May transport hazardous products or dangerous goods or heavy loads; short-haul and local transport on local routes and short interurban routes as needed.
- Operate and drive primarily trucks to transport goods and materials, including the loading and unloading of cargo and overseeing all aspects of vehicle condition.
- May drive special purpose trucks (tow trucks, dump trucks, hydrovac trucks or cement mixing trucks) as per seasonal requirements.
- Willing to stay in camps if required.
- Responsibilities also include staying punctual and attentive to detail.
Qualifications
- Class 1/1F/A Licence (semi trailer trucks); Driver's Licence (Class 1 or A)
- Driver logbook; Inspection report (pre-trip, en-route, post-trip)
- Logging, highway experience is an asset; Communication systems experience
- Citizens band (CB) radio experience is an asset; Transportation/travel experience
- Security and safety; Driver's validity licence check; Driving record check (abstract)
- Drive manual transmission vehicle
- Physically demanding - Weight handling up to 13.5 kg (30 lbs)
- Flexibility; Reliability; Patience
Note: Occupational first aid is an asset.
