Overview
The Executive Director (ED) will provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for STREB, ensuring a strong and sustainable business model to fulfill its mission and expand its impact. The ED will oversee all aspects of the organization, including fundraising, financial management, strategic planning, community engagement, and organizational development. Serving as the chief executive officer for the STREB Extreme Action Company, the STREB POPACTION School and the España-STREB Trapeze Academy, the ED will be a skilled communicator, an inclusive leader, and a values-based decision maker with a passion for STREB’s mission and history. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will lead the administrative team, manage daily operations and business matters, and ensure long-term sustainability and programmatic growth. The ED will also serve as a spokesperson for the organization, promoting the mission and vision while spearheading the creation of a new strategic plan. The right candidate will have a passion for the organization’s mission, a creative approach to challenges, and the ability to develop new partnerships with presenters, funders, and patrons, while activating a talented staff and a committed Board. Essential elements include income generation (both contributed and earned), strategy development and implementation, and a commitment to developing relationships within the civic, philanthropic, and artistic community. Nurturing existing relationships and securing new resources while representing STREB to the broader community. Challenges include: Encouraging patrons back to live performances amid changing buying trends. Balancing artistic ambition with fiscal stability and optimizing programming, partnerships, rentals, and activities to maximize productivity and revenue. Strengthening organizational brand and expanding messaging to boost audiences and increase earned revenue and enrollment across platforms to pre-pandemic levels and beyond. Key Priorities
The ED will lead the development and implementation of strategic plans and initiatives, ensuring alignment between programs, operations, and mission. The role includes fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous improvement and building strategic partnerships to advance STREB’s goals and impact. Financial Management and Fundraising The ED will oversee financial health, budget development, financial planning, and fiscal management. They will lead fundraising efforts, nurture existing funder relationships, and cultivate new donors across institutional, individual, corporate, and government sources. Developing and implementing strategies to diversify revenue streams will be essential for long-term sustainability. The ED will ensure compliance with financial reporting and work with the Board to develop sound financial policies and key performance indicators. Board Relations The ED will work closely with the Board of Directors to advance the mission, provide regular updates on activities and finances, support board development, and recruit Trustees for fundraising, audience development, advocacy, and governance. Community Engagement and External Relations As a primary spokesperson and ambassador for STREB, the ED will build relationships with New York, regional, and national communities and stakeholders. The ED will represent the organization at events and forums, articulate STREB’s mission and impact, and develop partnerships with cultural organizations, educational institutions, businesses, and community groups. They will oversee communications and marketing to raise STREB’s profile and ensure consistent messaging. Operational and Administrative Leadership The ED will oversee day-to-day operations of SLAM, ensure facilities support program goals, review policies and procedures, recruit and develop staff, and foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative culture. They will ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Experience, Skills & Qualifications
5+ years of leadership experience in a creative performing arts organization with a track record of managing people, operations, and budgets; ability to articulate a vision for STREB’s role in New York and beyond. Enthusiasm for fundraising and marketing with measurable success in cultivating major donors, supporting capital campaigns, increasing sponsorship, and generating new revenue. Effective leadership and management skills with the ability to develop and execute a strong business and strategic plan. Strong experience in and knowledge of the economics of arts organizations and aligning artistic ambition with resources. Ability to engage and inspire a diverse team to meet challenging goals on time and within budget in a fast-paced environment. Ability to make hard decisions compassionately, with awareness of their impact on individuals and the organization. Active network within the New York and global arts community with commitment to diverse and thought-provoking programming that is both artistically compelling and financially viable. Grit, drive, tenacity. Analytical problem-solving skills to identify and solve problems creatively and efficiently.
