Essential Functions
Police Operational, Investigative and Administrative Management Oversees American University Police Department (AUPD) functions, including patrol, incident response, initial patrol investigations, crime scene response, and event security oversight. Leads AUPD response to emergency/critical incidents. Is the Incident Commander or designates an Incident Commander who follows the Incident Command System/Standardized Emergency Management System (ICS/SEMS) protocol; assumes role as Incident Commander as needed. Actively participates on patrol during all three shifts on a regular basis. Oversees scheduling for patrol, required patrol officer training, communications, special events, special operations. Provides oversight for the Crisis Intervention Program. Assesses and plans police equipment needs, including uniforms, weapons, facilities and vehicles. Coordinates operational planning and procedures with other University Safety and Security Services (USSS) units. Verifies compliance with all applicable University and District of Columbia policies, regulations and laws. Planning and Process Analysis Utilizes statistical and data-driven managerial tools, such as CompStat and GIS, to develop strategic policing plans for the campus. Analyzes current AUPD, communications processes and recommends changes to enhance efficiency and simplification. Analyzes staffing allocations based on geography, incident volume, trends, and university plans. Develop plans for special operations, special events, dignitary visits and critical incidents. Develops and implements emergency preparedness plans for USSS and coordinates with internal and external partners.
Supervisory Responsibility
Directly supervises 1 FT Police Lieutenant. Indirectly supervises 4 FT Police Sergeants, 4 FT Police Corporals, 16 FT University Police Dispatchers, and 43 FT Police Officers.

Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work
Full-Time. 35 hours per week. Incumbent may be required to respond to incidents and conduct preliminary investigations, patrol by foot or vehicle, render emergency aid, make arrests, and defend themselves and others. Essential personnel per University policies. Must be able to work outside normal business hours, including nights and weekends.
Salary Range
$105,000 - $120,000 annually.
Required Education And Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in criminology, police science or related field. 4 - 6 years of relevant experience.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Must obtain and maintain a Government of the District of Columbia license for Campus Special Police Officer issued by MPD Security Office. Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to interact with a diverse population. Experience writing and implementing policy and analyzing law enforcement processes. Ability to evaluate critical situations and determine appropriate responses. Demonstrated ability to manage people, programs and budgets in a law enforcement agency in a diverse and dynamic community. Experience with modern law enforcement management strategies, operational and investigative techniques, and technological tools. Knowledge of community policing techniques, U.S. Code, D.C. Code, and laws of arrest, search, and seizure; emergency management and risk mitigation. Ability to obtain and maintain University Special Police Officer Commission; medical and psychiatric clearances; drug screens; valid driver’s license; University approval to drive University vehicles. Maintain and possess certification from a recognized law enforcement training academy and all required certifications for uniformed officers.
