The City of Aspen is seeking to fill two planning positions within the Community Development Department. Depending on experience and qualifications, candidates may be considered for the Planner Technician, Planner I, or Planner II role. Position Summary
This position works with other members of the land use and historic preservation planning team (12 members in total) under the broader Community Development department. Performs entry level to intermediate, professional-level planning and zoning work and technical duties to provide support and service to the public, to Community Development staff, and to other City agencies in a manner consistent with the organizations values and mission statement. Works under the supervision and general direction of the Principal Planner, Senior Planner, or Zoning Administrator. Essential Job Functions
Planner Technician: Performs entry level planning work, including research support, zoning support, and customer service. Conducts plan review of building permits for zoning compliance. Processes minor land use cases, such as condominium plats or document review, and assists more senior staff on major land use cases.
Planner I: Performs intermediate professional planning work, including participation in zoning support and special projects such as long-range planning and historic preservation. Processes minor land use cases, acts as primary reviewer for Residential Design Standards compliance, and assists senior staff on major land use cases.
Planner II: Performs full intermediate professional planning work including policy planning, code amendments, project support, zoning support, and departmental goals. Processes more technical land use cases such as subdivision reviews; acts as secondary reviewer for Residential Design Standards compliance; prepares and presents staff recommendations to City Council and Commissions.
Responsibilities Across All Planner Roles
Customer Service and Records Keeping:
Serve as primary planner of the day; provide exemplary customer service; explain regulations and procedures; maintain records and respond to public records requests. Land Use Planning:
Process administrative applications and prepare staff recommendations; apply professional judgment in complex issues. Zoning Support:
Ensure projects comply with city codes and land use approvals; perform zoning research and inspections as needed. City Organizational Values:

Minimum Qualifications
Planner Technician Education: Bachelors Degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, public administration, or related field. Experience: One year of professional planning experience. Technical Knowledge: Proficient in Microsoft Office; basic computer/database skills; graphic design helpful. Licenses: Valid Colorado Drivers License or ability to obtain within 30 days of start date.
Planner I Education: Bachelors Degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, public administration, or related field; Masters preferred. Experience: One to three years of professional planning experience (Masters may substitute). Technical Knowledge: Proficient in Microsoft Office; Salesforce experience desired; graphic design helpful. Licenses: Valid Colorado Drivers License or ability to obtain within 30 days; AICP encouraged.
Planner II Education: Masters Degree in related field; AICP preferred. Experience: One to four years in planning. Technical Knowledge: Proficient with Word, Excel, GIS tools; SketchUp; email. Licenses: Valid Colorado Drivers License or ability to obtain within 30 days; AICP preferred; other descriptors as applicable. Desirable Qualifications: Graphic design, architectural review, planning board presentation experience.
