Senior Named Solutions Engineer, Public Sector

What you'll do

Cloudflare's solutions engineering function collaborates with clients from early-stage ideation through to planning for production. As a Senior Solutions Engineer, you will sit alongside our clients, contribute energy, ideas and opinions on solving hard problems, and be willing to challenge preconceptions about what is possible.

You will have opportunities to develop adjacent technology expertise and to master skills in technical and industry advocacy for our clients. A key aspect is offering good practice guidance and adopting a deploy-to-production mindset, focusing on operational processes as much as the product.

As part of our broader solutions engineering community, you will work with peers who have deep subject-matter expertise and industry knowledge. As a senior member, you will contribute to a knowledge base across networking, cybersecurity and edge computing, as well as industry analyses and perspectives.

For this role, the Solutions Engineering team focuses on large clients to develop deep understanding and partnerships. Building on successful projects with clients such as the NCSC, this role emphasizes supporting public sector (local and central government) and select private sector clients where appropriate. Previous experience in supporting the public sector is beneficial but not mandatory.

Examples of desirable skills, knowledge and experience

Our Solutions Engineers come from IT, engineering, software development, product management, financial consulting, customer support and project delivery. We value diversity of experience and genuine curiosity for our technology.

You should be passionate about technology and able to explain complex technical concepts in clear terms. You are curious and enjoy building; you are eager to help customers realize the full potential of Cloudflare. You will find a collaborative environment where team members help each other.

You should have a solid understanding of how to manage technical validation projects so customers can form informed opinions about the best solution, with an eye toward what comes next.

Additional experience may include a combination of the following:

  • Showing up with a positive attitude, openness to new ideas, and energy to help clients and the team succeed.
  • 10+ years of IT industry experience (mid-level or senior engineering level).
  • Ability to manage a project, meet deadlines, and prioritize competing demands.
  • Empathy with customers and the ability to quickly identify challenges and pain points.
  • Understanding of how the Internet works, including:
    • Differences between TCP and UDP and applications that may favor one over the other;
    • Difference between authoritative DNS and recursive DNS;
    • Role of a firewall, importance of TLS/SSL, and understanding HTTP with curiosity about client and server quirks.
  • Understanding of how customers make buying decisions and how to explain ROI.
  • Knowledge of the competitive landscape for DDoS, CDN, Performance, DNS, Developer platform or Zero-Trust/SASE providers.
  • Willingness to travel regionally (approx. 15–30 days per quarter) to client offices, conferences and events.

Bonus!

  • Previous experience in a pre-sales SE or consulting role (not necessarily in tech).
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Bash) and a desire to expand skills.
  • Exposure to trends such as machine learning, GenAI, DevOps, and security operations.
