Position Summary The AIDS Clinical Trial Group ( ACTG ) is a cooperative network funded by the NIH DAIDS to cure HIV and reduce related burdens. The ACTG Leadership Operations Center (LOC) oversees ACTG grants, contracts, budgets, and finance. The ACTG LOC is led by the ACTG Chair and Vice Chair, together with the Executive Director and LOC Administrative Staff.
As Administrative head of ACTG LOC, the Executive Director provides day-to-day oversight of LOC operations by supervising all HR, financial, and operations activities. The Executive Director also serves as the chief liaison between UNC and international and multi-institutional clinical trials networks, including ACTG Network, NIH, and other regulatory and funding agencies. The Executive Director is responsible for management, direction, and fiscal oversight of a major translational clinical trials initiative led by the ACTG Chair.
This role requires coordination of a research and clinical trials infrastructure spanning virology, immunology, pharmacology, mycobacteriology, specimen banking, clinical trials design, data management, and regulatory affairs for new drugs and labs.
The Executive Director will lead the management of large multi-institutional, multi-million dollar translational clinical trials conducted at over 60 sites domestically and internationally. Primary responsibilities include serving as administrative and financial director for the ACTG, overseeing all financial operations and annual budgets, and supervising HR, contracts and grants oversight, and fund management.
The incumbent must lead and participate in planning highly complex, multidisciplinary initiatives on a national and international level, and communicate effectively with faculty across health sciences disciplines.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates with comparable independent research productivity or professional-level sponsored research administration experience, a relevant Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience may be substituted.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience Master’s degree in Public Health, Finance or Business Administration or equivalent work experience. Administrative/management experience preferably in an academic medical setting. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to a complex multi-institutional clinical trials group. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to interact with senior hospital leadership, ACTG faculty and staff, collaborating institutions, granting agencies, and vendors. Strong organizational skills, ability to delegate, supervise, and plan for timely and successful completion of objectives. Experience with managing complex research projects and establishing standard procedures. Ability to identify and manage strategic partnerships with domestic and international sites. Exceptional interpersonal skills for collaboration with international and domestic teams.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience Expert level knowledge of organizational management theory, financial systems and controls, reimbursement issues, and healthcare regulations; budget management; and alignment of clinical, teaching, and research activities. Knowledge of regulatory requirements with other research institutions and governing bodies.
