Overview
Principal Backend Engineer Hanwha Vision America, Carlsbad, CA Hanwha Vision America (HVA), formerly Hanwha Techwin, is an affiliate of the Hanwha Group. HVA provides advanced network video surveillance products, including IP cameras, storage devices, and video management systems. We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Software Engineer to join our core platform team to design, architect, implement, and maintain our next generation real-time video management, physical security services, and IoT SaaS platform. This role drives architectural decisions, ensures scalability and security, mentors engineers, and tackles complex engineering challenges. Collaboration with global teams (US East, US West, Korea, India) is required to align with Product Management and Product Engineering processes. Responsibilities Design, architect, implement, and maintain next?generation real-time video management and IoT SaaS platform components. Drive architectural decisions to ensure scalability, reliability, and security. Mentor and lead other engineers; collaborate with cross?functional teams (Product, DevOps, QA) across multiple regions. Apply cloud-native approaches, with emphasis on AWS, and integrate cybersecurity best practices throughout the development lifecycle. Collaborate with product management and engineering teams across US and international sites. Develop and enforce high standards for software development, including design patterns, documentation, testing, and code reviews.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's or Masters degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). 15-20+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating large-scale, distributed systems. Proven experience designing and developing real-time systems within video management services and/or IoT SaaS platforms. Experience designing scalable, responsive architectures (microservices, client-server patterns, concurrency). Extensive experience with AWS managed services for building and deploying cloud-native applications. Strong proficiency in Java and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash). Deep understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases, including DynamoDB and RDS/Aurora; experience with Redis. Experience with streaming data pipelines (Kafka) and search technologies (Elasticsearch/OpenSearch). Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, OWASP Top 10, and secure development lifecycle; experience with source control analysis and penetration testing reports. Experience designing robust RESTful APIs (versioning, OpenAPI/Swagger, backward compatibility). Leadership experience, with ability to guide complex projects and mentor engineers. Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with video streaming protocols (RTSP, WebRTC, Low-Latency HLS). AWS Certifications (e.g., Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional). Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code tools.
