Overview
The University of Vermont invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS). This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated leader to shape the future of the College within a Carnegie R1 designated University. CEMS is a community of problem solvers, inspiring interdisciplinary collaborations across the campus, the state, and the region. UVM seeks a distinguished scholar and educator with a record of academic and administrative excellence, leadership in institutional planning, and enrollment management. Experience with curriculum innovation, program assessment, fiscal management, policy and technology development, and promoting the values embodied in UVM's Our Common Ground are preferred. The Dean must demonstrate balance across engineering, computer science, mathematics, and physics, and foster interdisciplinary collaborations across the University while promoting UVM's collective goals. A record of fundraising and securing external funding is highly desired. A doctorate in an appropriate discipline and a stellar record of teaching and scholarship, as evidenced by promotion to full professor (or the attributes enabling appointment as a full professor at UVM), are required. UVM, located in Burlington, VT, is a Carnegie R1 public research university with a rich tradition of student success. CEMS includes the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, and Computer Science. The faculty and programs are highly collaborative, with established connections to nearly every other college on campus. The College is home to 1,400 undergraduates, 260 graduate students, 70 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 40 lecturers and senior lecturers, 30 research faculty and associates, and 30 staff. CEMS houses several research centers: the UVM Transportation Research Center, CREATE, the Center for Biomedical Innovation, and the Vermont Space Grant Consortium. The Dean will lead the College toward ABET accreditation completion in 2027 for the three departments and will oversee growth, financial management, fundraising, faculty recruitment and development, and the development of innovative academic programs. The Dean will implement strategic planning and engage with external partners to advance the College's mission. Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership for teaching, research, and service in CEMS; articulate a compelling vision and strategic plan aligned with the University’s goals. Oversee budgeting, financial management, fundraising, and development of new revenue streams. Recruit, develop, and retain distinguished faculty; support professional development and curriculum innovation; promote inclusive excellence. Advance scholarship and research; foster interdisciplinary collaborations; expand extramural funding; emphasize graduate education and training. Engage stakeholders to develop resources and opportunities; build partnerships regionally and beyond; advocate for the College’s educational, research, and service programs. Represent the College to the President, Provost, other Deans, and external partners; ensure facilities and governance support the College’s mission. Qualifications
A doctorate in an appropriate discipline and a stellar record of teaching and scholarship; promotion to full professor or equivalent at UVM. Administrative leadership experience; strong human resources and financial management skills; ability to resolve conflicts and negotiate. Commitment to inclusive excellence and to advancing opportunities for students, staff, and faculty. Familiarity with engineering, physics, computer science, and mathematics; ability to foster interdisciplinary collaboration across the University. Experience with fundraising and external resource development. Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to engage diverse stakeholders and represent the College externally.
