Research Scientist 1

role at

Massachusetts Institute of Technology . The Center for Biomedical Innovation (CBI) seeks a Research Scientist 1 to design and execute experiments to develop new understandings and methods for testing small extracellular vesicles (sEV) for therapeutic delivery. The candidate will develop methods for rapid detection of bacterial contamination and adventitious agents (AA) in sEV manufacturing, based on (1) rapid Mass Spectrometry detection of a metabolomic signature for bacterial contamination, and (2) next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based detection of AA genetic material. Methods will be validated through spiking studies during continuous sEV manufacturing and integrated into the process. The Research Scientist will support validation by providing technical clarification or additional data as needed to support spiking studies; perform NGS in complex biological matrices; and design and execute NGS workflows with attention to sample quality, data integrity, and challenges unique to complex biological systems. Responsibilities Design and execute experiments to develop methods for rapid detection of bacterial contamination and AA in sEV manufacturing. Develop detection approaches based on Mass Spectrometry metabolomic signatures and NGS-based detection of AA genetic material. Validate methods through spiking studies during continuous sEV production and work toward integrating methods into the manufacturing process. Provide technical clarification or additional data to support validation and spiking studies. Perform NGS in complex biological matrices and design/execute NGS workflows with attention to sample quality and data integrity.

Qualifications

REQUIRED: Ph.D. and a minimum of two years of experience in Biochemical or Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, or related field. Experience with traditional molecular biology techniques such as PCR, ELISA, and Western blotting. Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong prioritization, troubleshooting, and development of detailed technical protocols. Strong professional communication and documentation skills, including internal communications, external publications, scientific presentations, and recordkeeping.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience performing NGS, especially in complex matrices. Experience with growth of mammalian cells and development of rapid, point-of-use analytical tools.
