The Student Applications Developer will support the Virginia Community College Systems enterprise Student Information System (Campus Solutions 9.2) and related student-facing applications. The incumbent provides development, configuration, administration, and performance monitoring for SIS components, integrations, and reporting. The role is responsible for designing and supporting complex solutions that improve student experience, enable operational efficiency, and integrate with external products such as Salesforce, EAB, test score systems, eForms, and future solutions such as Oracle Student Financial Planning (SFP). Responsibilities The developer collaborates closely with functional leads, other developers, and integration platform staff (Boomi, Salesforce, etc.) to deliver stable, efficient, and scalable student applications that directly support VCCSs mission of providing affordable and accessible education to all Virginians. Design and support complex solutions that improve the student experience, enable operational efficiency, and integrate with external products and cloud services. Develop, configure, administer, and monitor performance of SIS components, integrations, and reporting. May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications
Comprehensive knowledge:
Demonstrated experience applying analytical skills involving large-scale applications with distributed representation, application and database servers and clients. Considerable Knowledge:
Experience in applying HTML, XML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, SQL, PL/SQL, JDBC, REST and SOAP APIs, caching solutions, Tomcat, Linux shell scripting and other open-source technology to large-scale applications. Experience with tools:
Eclipse, SQL Developer / TOAD and Boomi. Working Knowledge:
SQL, Oracle development tools, Java; ERP development tools including App Designer, PeopleCode, Data Mover, and Query; debugging integration errors across SIS and third-party applications (Canvas, EAB, Parchment, eForms, test score loads); UNIX/Windows server skills; GitHub and version control; ticketing/ITSM systems (TeamDynamix or equivalent); understanding of higher education settings and student systems (admissions, enrollment, records, financial aid, advising). Considerable Skill:
Proven ability to define and develop solutions based on business requirements; excellent written and verbal communications skills and experience with demanding application environments. Working Skill:
Customer service orientation; experience developing and supporting interfaces to external applications; experience delivering student-serving applications with Oracle/PeopleSoft ERPs and third-party systems like Gideon Taylor eForms and Salesforce; ability to work with the team during emergencies (including weekend maintenance); familiarity with hardware load balancers; ability to deploy software across multiple systems and perform late-night activities for high availability; strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills; ability to balance multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment; on-call 24/7 availability for maintenance and outage resolution. Ability:
Work independently and collaboratively within a distributed ITS team; deliver high-quality technical solutions; learn new tools/languages as needed; provide 24x7 on-call support during planned outages or emergencies; detail-oriented; manage multiple tasks; work under stress; use logic to resolve complex problems; communicate effectively with all levels of staff and management; understand a technical environment and plan accordingly; seek creative solutions and analyze user needs to solve problems. Education and Experience
A combination of completed coursework and experience in Information Systems, Computer Science or a related field providing the skills necessary to be successful in the position. This position is a state classified position. All classified employees new to the Commonwealth of Virginia will serve a 12-month probationary period.
