The District is seeking a person to organize, schedule, direct, and supervise the activities and operations of the District's school bus system including vehicle maintenance and to implement policies as required by the governing board and in accordance with applicable State regulations.

DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent of Business Services, the person holding this position will: organize, schedule, direct, and supervise the activities and operations of the District's school bus system including vehicle maintenance and to implement policies as required by the governing board and in accordance with applicable State regulations. Employees in this classification receive limited supervision within a broad framework of policies and procedures. Employees in this classification supervise and evaluate the work of others. This job class is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient transportation of students throughout the District. This job class requires specialized knowledge of safety and logistics as applied to the scheduling, routing, maintenance, and repair of school buses.

SUPERVISOR

:

Associate Superintendent of Business Services

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Coordinates and supervises the District's transportation system, trainers, and dispatch personnel

Supervises and evaluates the overall performance of school bus drivers and vehicle maintenance personnel

Schedules and assigns driving personnel to established routes

Monitors the availability of school buses and vehicles needed to meet the District's transportation needs

Plans, directs, coordinates, and participates in instructing and training drivers for proper licensing and/or license renewal; implements bus driver training program

Schedules and routes buses for transportation, athletic events, field trips, and extracurricular activities

Establishes, implements, and coordinates a preventive maintenance program of school buses to satisfy California Highway Patrol Guidelines and other safety requirements and to minimize repair costs

Prepares budget estimates for transportation activities and operations; recommending needed equipment, stock, and personnel requirements

Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with the California Highway Patrol; conferring on potentially dangerous situations on bus routes or on-the-road performance of drivers, disseminating new information regarding laws affecting school bus transportation, and assisting with annual safety inspection of buses

Maintains records of operational costs; prepares a variety of reports and correspondence related to transportation unit operations

Facilitates planning with school sites to learn about and meet their transportation needs for the school year

Establishes and/or recommends to Administration, standards, schedules, and priorities related to transportation routes, schedules, and emergency plans

Drives buses when needed

Orders needed supplies/materials for unit operations and maintains appropriate stock levels

Performs other related duties as required

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:

The California State Motor Vehicle Code, State Education Code, and District policies related to the operation and maintenance of vehicles used in transporting students

School bus/vehicle repair, maintenance, preventive maintenance, and parts procurement

The basic philosophy of preventive maintenance of vehicles

Proper budget and record-keeping procedures and methods

Supervisory methods and techniques

City streets, landmarks, and school locations which the District services

Ability to:

Plan, schedule, supervise and evaluate the work of others

Accurately estimate resource needs and allocate and monitor assigned resources effectively

Establish and monitor a variety of records and to prepare reports

Communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written form

Successfully identify problems (both technical and supervisorial), secure relevant information, and identify probable cause(s) and possible solution(s)

Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties

Prepare and maintain accurate cost and operational transportation records and reports

Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers including electronic spreadsheets and database utilization

Prepare county, federal, and state mandated reports

Perform research, compiling information from a variety of sources, maintaining accurate records and files

Analyze, interpret, and prepare financial statements and reports

Meet District standards for professional attitude and effective leadership

Train and supervise the performance of assigned personnel

Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action

Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with fellow employees and those contacted in the course of work

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License

Possession of a valid California School Bus Driver's Certificate

Minimum one year supervisory experience is preferred
