Summary

Performs skilled preventative maintenance and repairs on petroleum/electric vehicles, trucks, boats, transit busses, generators, construction/heavy equipment as well as emergency vehicles for the City of Coral Gables. Work is assigned, reviewed by inspection, and performed under the direction of an Automotive Coordinator.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

Inspects and tests vehicles, makes visual and operational inspections of vehicles to diagnose problems and fixes problems affecting a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and heavy equipment such as: automobiles, passenger buses, police and fire specialized equipment, Sewer Maintenance/ Vacuum Trucks (Vactor and Vac -Con), Compacting Garbage and Recycle trucks, Back Hoes, Water Tank Trucks, Commercial Grade Marine vessels and Vessel Trailer repairs, Heavy equipment trailers, Seaweed Collection Boat, Street Sweepers, Grapple Trucks, Bobcat and specialized attachments, Water pumps, pressure cleaners, Tractors etc.

General trucks, public works construction and maintenance equipment, etc.

Participates in the widest variety of automotive maintenance and repairs from minor work to complete rebuilding, including minor welding and cutting.

Troubleshoots, repairs/rebuilds and installs diesel and gasoline motors, grind valves, replaces main bearings as well as troubleshoots and repairs transmissions, universal joins, differentials, PTO units, and Transfer cases.

Diagnose Hydraulic systems and, rebuilds/replaces hydraulic pumps, hoses, motors, controls, cylinders

Troubleshoots, rebuilds/replaces automotive electrical components such as starters, generators, distributors, voltage regulators, etc.

Hydraulic hose fabrication and repairs

Diesel emission system diagnosis and repairs

Repair Steering and suspension systems

Diagnose and repair Anti-Lock brake systems Air and Hydraulic type

Complete Brake system repairs Air and Hydraulic type

Perform maintenance and repairs on mobile and fixed base Generators

Change tires and repairs flats on a variety of heavy equipment

Fabrication of components

Perform front end and four wheel alignments

Perform extensive electrical diagnosis review Electrical diagrams and schematics for troubleshooting electrical problems

Diagnose and repair Air conditioning systems

Provides roadside assistance to operators of City vehicles and tows vehicles to garage as needed.

Consults with supervisor to determine costs of repairs and obtain technical assistance.

Performs scheduled maintenance on vehicles as assigned.

Delivers vehicles to outside vendors and retrieves vehicles when work is completed. Interprets and acts upon work orders. Prepares and updates maintenance records and signs off on work orders.

Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.

Conforms with all safety rules which includes wearing and using all appropriate safety equipment.

Performs other related tasks as required.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum six (6) years at the journeyman level in the skilled repair of automotive and construction equipment is necessary.

ASE certification preferred.

Valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License.

CDL requirement may be waived for up to 120 days but must be obtained by the end of the 120 days for continued employment; as long as employee has a valid Florida Driver's License.

Furnish own tools and repair equipment.

A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement.

HOLIDAYS: 16 days including 3 floating days.

SICK LEAVE: 96 hours annually.

ANNUAL LEAVE: 80 hours in the first year of employment, increasing up to 188 hours after 25 years. Employees must take 40 hours of annual leave each year.

BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: 5 or 10 work days for the death of a family member in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and the City's Personnel Rules & Regulations.

MEDICAL INSURANCE: Fully paid by the City (HMO Select). Coverage becomes effective 1st of month following 30 days. Employee may purchase coverage for eligible dependents at a cost of approximately 50% of the premium.

DENTAL INSURANCE: Available to all employees through payroll deduction.

LIFE INSURANCE : Term Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment equal to 1 x annual salary, fully paid by the City (up to $200,000).

VOLUNTARY BENEFITS: Several plans available, such as Short-Term Disability, Life Insurance and Critical Illness policies through payroll deductions.

LEGAL SERVICES: Legal Service plan available at a cost to employees through payroll deductions.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Employees are given the option to defer a portion of their pre-tax salary into the 457 Deferred Compensation Program.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: $2000 per semester ($6,000 maximum annually) for approved college coursework.

SAFETY GLASSES: Required safety glasses are provided every 2 years.

RECREATIONAL USE: Employee, spouse and immediate family members seventeen (17) years of age and under are entitled to the benefits below:

Venetian Pool – No charge for daily admission.

Tennis Centers – No charge for daily court fees.

Youth Center – 50% off residential rates for memberships and 50% off camps and other programs.

Golf at Biltmore & Granada:

Monday through Friday – no charge.

Saturday, Sunday and Holidays:

- Before Noon – Twilight fees apply

- After Noon – No charge

(cart fees apply at all times)

PENSION: Mandatory employee contribution of 10% of salary. Vesting period is 10 years.

OR

As of 6/14/2016 - DEFINED CONTRIBUTION: 401(a) - Contribution by City of 7% of employee base annual salary. Vesting period 5 years. Employee not required to contribute.
