The Senior Accountant plays a crucial role in the finance department, responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulatory requirements. This position requires a strong understanding of accounting practices, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team. The Senior Accountant will contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting operations and provide valuable insights to support decision-making. Candidates must be local to the Chicagoland area.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, in accordance with GAAP.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closes.
- Support the annual audit process by preparing schedules, providing documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries.
- General Ledger & Reconciliations:
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Perform complex account reconciliations, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
- Review and approve journal entries, ensuring proper coding and supporting documentation.
- Accounts Payable/Receivable Support:
- Oversee and review accounts payable and accounts receivable processes as needed.
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of invoices, payments, and collections.
- Assist in resolving complex vendor or customer issues.
- Compliance & Internal Controls:
- Ensure compliance with internal accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new accounting policies and procedures.
- Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
- Stay up-to-date with changes in accounting regulations and best practices.
- Fixed Assets:
- Manage the fixed asset ledger, including additions, disposals, and depreciation calculations.
- Perform periodic fixed asset reconciliations.
- Payroll:
- Assist with payroll processing and related reconciliations (e.g., payroll taxes, benefits).
- Ensure compliance with payroll regulations.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. CPA or actively pursuing CPA preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Experience with financial statement preparation and analysis.
- Proven experience with general ledger maintenance and account reconciliations.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle).
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, advanced formulas).
- Experience with financial reporting tools is a plus.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
