DESCRIPTION Under the direction of higher-level staff, the GIS Coordinator performs, coordinates, and supervises the day-to-day functions related to developing and maintaining the Citys Geographic Information System (GIS), databases, and related applications. Supports citywide database administration, including integrating local and regional data sets, developing GIS internal and public mapping programs, and providing GIS services and support to staff and system users. Performs other related duties as assigned. Duties may include, but are not limited to: Develops, coordinates, and maintains the Citys GIS, databases, and related applications. Schedules, trains, supervises, and reviews the work of assigned staff in GIS activities, including providing feedback, evaluating employee performance, counseling employees, and recommending initial disciplinary action. Assists in recruitment, selection, and promotion. Consults with City departments to identify GIS needs and requirements; designs, develops, or supervises the resulting GIS databases and applications, including performing needs assessments, coordinating data acquisition and preparation, testing, and examining data integrity. Serves as a technical resource to all City departments, establishing GIS system protocols, providing assistance and training, coordinating software purchases, maintaining licenses, troubleshooting, and supporting GIS software, databases, and applications. Meets with users to ensure understanding of GIS needs and consistent service delivery. Keeps current with technology changes. Researches, creates, quality checks, and maintains GIS data layers using sources like local/regional agency data, CAD drawings, GPS data, and orthophotos; creates metadata; designs cartographic and visual outputs; conducts spatial overlay analysis, including image analysis and 2D visualization. Designs and implements programs and code using languages like Avenue, Python, SQL, Visual Basic, and applications such as ArcIMS, ArcGIS Server, and ArcView to automate processes. Develops and supervises maintenance of the Citys web mapping applications and public GIS data download site. Performs technical analysis, including field surveys and project analysis through GPS, integrating information into GIS. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Please see the full job description here. Experience and Training: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Typically: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with coursework in GIS, geography, computer science, or related fields; and at least three (3) years of responsible GIS experience, preferably in the public sector; at least one (1) year of programming and supervisory experience. Relevant experience can substitute for education on a year-to-year basis. Knowledge of: Principles and practices of GIS, database management, hardware/software, employee supervision, spatial analysis, map projections, GPS, software like ArcGIS, ArcView, ArcGIS Server, programming languages including Python, Avenue, Visual Basic, and related technical concepts. Also, data collection methods, mathematical functions, record keeping, technical writing, and effective communication skills. Ability to: Work in a networked environment, develop and analyze geographic data, supervise staff, interpret maps and plans, program GIS applications, troubleshoot, plan projects, research and maintain data, import/export data, analyze user needs, develop training, work independently and in teams, communicate effectively, and establish cooperative relationships. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in office and field environments. Must be able to sit for long periods, view screens, operate equipment, traverse terrain, operate a vehicle, work outdoors in varying weather, communicate effectively, and lift up to 50 lbs.
