Assists students in specialized educational programs who have a variety of physical handicaps, learning disabilities, emotional or behavioral problems on a one-to-one or group basis reinforcing lesson plans; independently adjusts methods/approach/pace of instructional material; maintains student discipline in group activities; performs classroom support activities; maintains a variety of records; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics:

The class of Instructional Assistant II is distinguished from the class of Instructional Assistant I in that the former's assignment consists of at least a majority of the following characteristics/duties: operates under a master teacher concept; issues student referrals; works in specialized educational programs such as Special Education, Opportunity Classes, ESL, Alternative Learning Programs and Vocational Training; works with students who are low achievers, limited/non-English speakers or who have physical handicaps, learning disabilities or significant behavioral problems; uses a variety of motivation/disciplinary techniques including concerted individual approaches and understanding to student problems; independently adjusts pace/approach of instructional materials; works with multiple learning systems; spends the great majority of time working with students; curriculum consists of multiple grade levels; demands greater patience due to slow learners or behavioral problems; may be subject to greater physical and verbal abuse; and errors/poor judgment may not only impact the educational program and public image, but potentially result in significant student confrontations. The class of Instructional Assistant II is distinguished from the class of Personal Care Assistant in that the former has primary responsibilities in providing instructional assistance to students and attends to a lower level of physical needs. Education:

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires all paraprofessionals who provide instructional assistance to possess a high school diploma or equivalent along with one (1) of the following: A minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter units of college coursework. An Associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university. Pass an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of the ability to assist in teaching, reading, writing and mathematics. Experience:

A minimum of six (6) months of experience working with students or school-age children in a school, health services, or other structured environment is required; experience working with special education students is desirable. Positions in a specialized language classification require individuals who can speak and read (bilingual) or speak, read and write (bilingual/biliterate) a second language as specified. A valid First Aid Certificate, comparable to the American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate and a Child and Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate is required for all positions. Successful completion of up to 12 hours of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training is required during the probationary period. Employees in this classification work both inside and outside, may be exposed to wetness, urine, feces, strong odors, airborne pathogens and germs, and have direct contact with students and the public. Employees in this classification stand, walk, repetitively use fingers, use both hands simultaneously, stoop/bend, reach overhead, have rapid mental and/or muscular coordination, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. or over 50 lbs. with assistance, push/pull students of varying weights in wheelchairs, speak clearly, and hear normal voice conversation. The examination may consist of the following: Assessment (if candidate does not have 48 semester or 72 quarter units of college coursework) Structured Interview Bilingual evaluation (Ability to speak and read in Spanish) Biliterate evaluation (Ability to read/write in Spanish) This position requires a valid First Aid Certificate, comparable to the American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate AND a Child and Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate. Please be sure you select the correct option or sign up for both courses. New employees will be charged a processing fee (approximately $64) for the cost of fingerprinting. This fee must be paid at the time of processing appointment, with a MONEY ORDER ONLY, payable to RUSD. Veterans with thirty (30) days or more of active service (during a time of war or national emergency) who obtain a passing score shall be allowed an additional credit of five (5) points and disabled veterans receive ten (10) additional points. Employees with one (1) to three (3) years of service earn vacation at the rate of one (1) day for each month in paid status for a maximum of 12 vacation days per year. The number of vacation days earned progressively increases as provided in the RUSD-CSEA Agreement, Appendix A. Part-time employees earn vacation benefits prorated on the average number of hours worked per day per month in their regular assignments. For twelve month employees, fifteen (15) paid holidays are earned each year and one (1) floating holiday per calendar year. One (1) day of sick leave is earned for each full month of service which may be accumulated from year to year. Employees who transfer from another California school district, including a county superintendent of schools office, who have accrued sick leave may transfer it to this District. Employees whose regular work assignment is thirty (30) hours or more per week are eligible to participate in the District's insurance program which consists of medical, dental, vision, life insurance and income protection. Beginning the 2022-23 school year, all permanent employees who have an earned Bachelor's or Master's degree beyond the requirements for their position are eligible for a stipend. Once a transcript is submitted and verified by the Human Resources division, unit members will be eligible for one stipend based on the highest degree earned. Employees who work 20 hours or more per week will be enrolled in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
