TITLE: Managing Director of Development
DEPARTMENT: Development
STATUS: Full-Time, Year-Round
REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer
On-Site/Hybrid- Negotiable upon hire
Position Summary/Objective:
The Managing Director of Developments responsibility will center on Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation strategic planning and the strengthening of the organizations capacity to fulfill our mission: To protect and preserve the culture, tradition, and living heritage of North American Indians. The Foundation demonstrates its commitment to this endeavor by supporting these key initiatives:
Continuing progress on carving Crazy Horse Memorial. Operating Crazy Horse Memorial University. Operating The Indian Museum of North America and The Native American Educational and Cultural Center.
Reporting to the CEO, the Managing Director of Development sets a strategic vision to ensure Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation exceeds its revenue goals and is financially sustainable. This person will lead multiple direct reports and have responsibility for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals, corporations, and foundations. Overall, the Managing Director of Development will deliver strong outcomes within a culture that embraces learning and continuous improvement.
This individual will specifically solicit private gifts and grants (annual, major, legacy, and corporate) through direct solicitation and philanthropic events. The Director of Development will expand and diversify the Foundations donor base and work closely with the Senior Executive Team, the development staff, and other CHMF area managers and staff to secure increased annual and long-term funding for CHMF. The amount of funding raised by CHMF will increase in future years as CHMF systematically and effectively strengthens its fundraising capacity.
This individual will be a leader in the truest sense: visionary, a builder, innovator, and focused on results in order to enhance and optimize Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation operations. The Managing Director of Development will excel at balancing patience with urgency given the demands of this multi-faceted role.
Specifically, the Managing Director of Development will be responsible for managing the following critical areas:
Job Duties:
Working with Leadership (20%)
Report to and work closely with the Chief Executive Officer and development staff, developing a tactical strategy for the development department to fulfill the annual fundraising goal of $10M, via donor relations, corporate gifts, and foundation grants. Participate in Board Meetings and Committees, as requested. Other duties as assigned and trained for.
Managing the Development Function (60%)
Oversee and direct the implementation of the annual fundraising plan by leading the development department (staff of approx. 8-10) and establishing goals for each member: Personally manage a portfolio of major donors Mentor and empower Gift Officers as you guide them in managing their individual portfolios to meet annual goals. Attend a minimum of two annual market visits with each Gift Officer, visiting with donors and implementation of a systematic

process. Oversee Gift Officers implementation of regional events. Work with department database manager to leverage software tools and an already completed assessment of the donor base to maximize fundraising potential. Work with an outside agency to conduct a feasibility study for the next campaign.
Collaborate and participate in ongoing, legacy events for the purposes of friend-raising and further developing relations with long-term donors. Collaborate with marketing in the production of materials for brand awareness and engagement, increasing visibility amongst funding partners and the community. Other duties as assigned and trained for.
Monitoring, Reporting & Refining (20%)
Develop budgets, forecast revenue, and monitor results of events, programs, donor visits, grant applications and overall campaigns. Review the success of activities with the development team and other related departments. Consistently provide progress reports to the CEO and the Board of Directors
Refine (as needed) ongoing programming/events to increase gifts and/or retain donors. Generate new ideas/programs that increase revenue and donor longevity. Other duties as assigned and trained for.
Essential Functions
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills Demonstrated team leadership skills, including hiring, coaching, and developing staff, and fostering a positive, collaborative environment. Experience stewarding a portfolio of contacts. Experience with CRM platforms High level of professionalism, integrity, diplomacy, and accountability. Excellent project planning, project management, and budgeting skills. Highly motivated, organized, creative and flexible and able to effectively multi-task. Outstanding written and oral communication skills. Ability to reliably travel to meet with donors. Proficient in core computer skills including word processing, database management, spreadsheets, navigating the web and electronic communications.
Required Education/Qualifications/Experience
A bachelors degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field. Three (3) to Six (6) years of experience in non-profit fundraising or a similar relationship driven industry. Securing and cultivating key relationships that have proven to drive growth/revenue. Planning and implementing events.
Ability to train and build trusting relations with direct reports and colleagues.
Preferred Education/Experience/Competencies
Seven (7) to Ten (10) years of experience in non-profit fundraising, specificallymanaging donor relations in a mission-driven organization, including: Cultivating and securing six figure gifts. Securing major grants.
Ability to train staff in fundraising best practices. Experience with fundraising and donor management software. Specific experience with Raisers Edge is desired but not a must. CFRE Certification.
