Fishery Biologist 4 (Region 2 Research Coordinator)
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 4 (Region 2 Research Coordinator) located in Anchorage, Homer, Palmer, or Soldotna! What you will be doing: The incumbent in this position will be responsible for the sport fisheries research in Southcentral Alaska including the drainages of Cook Inlet, Prince Willian Sound, Bristol Bay, the Alaska Peninsula, and Kodiak Island. This person will foster the development of research initiates that serve fisheries management needs for sport fish, groundfish, and shellfish resources and supervise the planning, analysis, and evaluation of these research programs. This person will directly supervise six fishery biologists and exercise technical supervision of Sport Fish Division staff and projects that address stock status of regional fisheries resources. The work of this position is varied with involvement on a wide array of topics such as salmon stock assessments, fishery enhancement opportunities, rockfish investigations, aquatic invasive species, research funding acquisition, and others. This leadership position also offers the opportunity to mentor fishery biologists under the incumbent's supervision as well as fisheries graduate students, thereby helping to shape the next generation of fishery professionals. While based in the office, this position offers flexibility in work schedules, opportunities to assist in the field, exposure to all fishery topics under the region's purview, and potential for advancement within ADF&G. The working conditions you can expect: The preferred duty station for this position is in the Anchorage Regional ADF&G office, but the ADF&G offices in Homer, Palmer, and Soldotna will also be considered. The position occupies a single office during normal business hours, typically from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. This position frequently meets with staff and project partners, both in-person and over Microsoft TEAMs. Requires occasional travel within the State for field visits and Alaska Board of Fisheries meetings (usually 1-3 trips of up to a week per year). Requires the ability to carry a firearm while in the field. Who we are looking for: We are looking for and individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities: Advanced knowledge of fisheries ecology and stock assessment. Significant experience in modeling, study design, data analysis, and interpretation of results. Advanced verbal and written communication skills including public speaking and technical writing to various audiences. Experience supervising professional level staff and overseeing complex and unrelated projects. Experience preparing for Alaska Board of Fisheries meetings and presenting complex fisheries topics to the board. Special Note: A valid driver's license is required. This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition. For those not already certified training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee. Scientific Collector`s Permit (State of Alaska - ADF&G) Fish and Game Peace Officer (State of Alaska - ADF&G) CPR/First Aid Certification.
