The University of California, San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). This position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level. We seek a motivated, broad-thinking scientist and educator to establish a vigorous research program and provide intellectual leadership in their field while complementing existing expertise at SIO and other UC San Diego departments. We invite applicants with demonstrated ability in original research in biology and the deep-sea floor. The successful candidate could work in multiple deep-water benthic settings, including, but not limited to, hydrothermal vents, seeps, trenches, seamounts, submarine canyons, or abyssal plains. Areas of interest could include benthic ecology, interactions with the seafloor, benthic-pelagic coupling, physiology or developmental biology of metazoans in deep-sea habitats, deep-sea microbial biology, or human impacts/influences on benthic ecosystem processes and services. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work integrates across disciplines, embraces cutting-edge methodologies, and addresses fundamental questions about life in deep-sea habitats. The candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring. Responsibilities

Responsibilities include developing and teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Of particular interest are courses on deep-sea biology. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD or equivalent degree in marine biology, marine ecology, oceanography, or a relevant field, is required at the time of application. Preferred qualifications
