Overview

VP, Medical Affairs And Chief Medical Officer role at UNC Health. The Vice President, Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer is responsible for medical affairs of the hospital and for providing leadership to the Medical Staff from a medical management perspective. The VP facilitates communication and understanding among the clinical components of Wayne UNC Health Care with a goal of providing high quality, efficient and safe care. Provides oversight and support for the Medical Staff structure with daily operations, quality patient care, and compliance with legal, regulatory, accreditation and The Joint Commission standards and requirements. Collaborates with Senior Leadership and the Board of Directors. The VP/CMO is responsible for medical services planning in conjunction with Medical Staff leadership; contract development, negotiation, implementation; leads and supports improvement of electronic medical record technology and clinical quality improvement activities. Supports the goals, mission and values of the hospital while providing organized and effective leadership. Responsibilities Serves as the leader and administrative support to organized medical staff, elected medical staff leaders, department chairs, committee chairs and medical directors. Provides support and advice to elected Medical Staff officers, department chairs, committee chairs and medical directors in managing Medical Staff affairs. Ensure ethical workplace practices; ensures medical staff activities comply with Hospital Bylaws, Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and Policies; compliance with federal/state laws and The Joint Commission standards. Acts as liaison between hospital administration and Medical Staff leadership; coordinates communications among Medical Staff departments and committees; attends Medical Staff meetings as ex-officio member. Promotes medical staff alignment with organizational goals; oversees medical staff corrective action process. Serves as liaison between medical staff administration and the CEO, Board of Directors, senior leadership and department directors. Participates in establishing the organizations mission, strategic plan, budgets, resource allocation, program development and policies; supports clinical equipment and supplies selection. Advises the Board and leadership on physicians and clinical practice; interacts with senior leadership; facilitates communication between administration and medical staff leadership. Attends Board meetings; participates in system-wide roundtable and implements system initiatives at Wayne UNC Health Care. Assists Medical Staff in reviewing clinical practices to promote high quality care and patient outcomes; oversees clinical practices and quality improvement initiatives. Drives care transitions, care standards, cost reduction, resource utilization and EHR optimization; collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer to advance inter-professional patient care. Develops and revises clinical practice guidelines; drives clinical standardization; oversees physician performance measures including OPPE/FPPE. Leads liaison with Performance Improvement Department on Quality Improvement Organization matters and third-party payers regarding physician performance. Leads Medical Staff improvements in care transitions and outcomes; promotes patient safety and a culture of safety. Oversees service standards for medical staff and organization; monitors patient satisfaction and uses data to improve systems, processes and outcomes. Serves as organizations Chief Medical Informatics Officer; collaborates with IT to advance clinical information technologies; chairs Clinical/Medical Informatics Committees as needed. Oversees departments: Medical Staff Services, Medical Staff Performance Improvement, Utilization Management, Clinical Documentation and Medical Student Affairs; manages appointments and reappointments including credentialing and privileging. Develops strategic and operational plans for supervised departments; manages HR matters in collaboration with Human Resources; provides budget and policy oversight; oversees physician contracts and services; assists with contract negotiations. Promotes medical staff development, recruitment and retention; maintains trust and engagement through effective communication with leadership and medical staff. Performs executive on-call duties on a rotational basis in support of the CEO and leadership team.

Qualifications

Masters degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, or board certification as a Certified Physician Executive (CPE) preferred; CPE may be in lieu of a Masters degree. North Carolina medical license (unrestricted) required. Board certification in a clinical discipline required. Minimum of five (5) years of clinical practice; physician leadership experience as Medical Director, Clinical Chair or other medical-administrative role required. Prior VP Medical Affairs or CMO experience preferred. Exceptional relationship-building, communication, negotiation and leadership skills; strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Proficiency in MS Office and EMR; ability to learn new software rapidly; English communication proficiency.
