Overview
Environmental Health and Safety Specialist Contract (W2) position in San Diego, CA. Duration: 12 Months. Total Hours/week: 40. First Shift. Client: Medical Devices Company. Level of Experience: Mid Level. Employment Type: Contract on W2 (US Citizens, GC Holders, GC EAD, OPT, EAD or CPT eligible). Responsibilities
As the EHS Specialist III, prepare and/or assist in preparing policies and procedures in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). Maintain extensive knowledge in EHS Programs, including but not limited to Fall Protection, Powered Industrial Vehicles, Ergonomics, Training, Risk Assessment, and Emergency Response for a large-scale Distribution Center or Warehouse. Possess a solid understanding of the CalEPA CERS reporting system and management of hazardous waste (including universal e-waste). Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on regulatory compliance issues and workplace injury reporting and investigation. Work on problems of diverse scope requiring evaluation of data to select appropriate methods and techniques for solutions. Perform routine tasks with little instruction and supervision, with general instruction on new assignments. Collaborate closely with senior internal and external personnel. Must-Have Qualifications
Familiar with DHS, OSHA, EPA, RCRA, Air Quality, and Water Pollution regulations. Experience solving ergonomic safety concerns and conducting ergonomic evaluations in different work settings (Industrial, Warehouse, Materials Handling). Experience managing hazardous waste programs. Minimum 5 years of related experience in warehouse, distribution center, or biotech/medical device manufacturing with safety and/or environmental responsibilities. Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinate/Supervise all site EHS programs, including hazardous waste, fall protection, powered industrial trucks, storm water, air permitting, fire safety, and emergency response. Conduct incident investigations (near misses, compliance issues, injuries/illnesses). Analyze OSHA 300 Logs, Workers Compensation trends, and industry best practices to identify trends and reduce incidents site-wide. Manage site Ergonomics Program; act as primary liaison for ergonomic evaluations and develop improved techniques to address injury trends. Provide training and guidance on all EHS Training Programs (IIPP, Hazard Communication, Blood Borne Pathogens, Powered Industrial Trucks, Fall Protection, Emergency Response). Create and deliver effective training and lesson plans. Determine needed procedures and work instructions, draft them, and obtain client approval through established processes. Manage Hazardous Waste and recycling programs; seek green disposal alternatives; maintain chemical inventory and SDS files; coordinate annual chemical inventory updates. Chair the Safety Committee (in the absence of the EHS Manager); produce meeting minutes and coordinate communications with committee members. Conduct regulatory evaluations, write reports, and report activities to EHS Manager. Develop budget information and assist in annual site EHS budgeting. Maintain site permits (storm water, HMBP, air quality, Hazardous Waste, etc.) and ensure work areas meet regulatory requirements. Submit permit applications as necessary. Coordinate monthly site inspections of all departments and follow up with the EHS Manager. Manage Bloodborne Pathogen Program, coordinate Hepatitis B and Tetanus vaccine programs and training requirements. Maintain knowledge of applicable regulations (OSHA, EPA, California Health and Safety Code). Conduct periodic safety inspections and ensure corrective actions. Participate as a Safety Committee member. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors Degree desired; safety or related discipline strongly preferred. Minimum 5 years of related experience in warehouse, distribution center, or biotech/medical device manufacturing with safety/environmental responsibilities. Experience solving ergonomic safety concerns and performing ergonomic evaluations in various settings (office, warehouse, materials handling). Experience managing hazardous waste programs strongly preferred. Familiar with DHS, OSHA, EPA, RCRA, Air Quality, and Water Pollution regulations. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and time pressures. Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Proficiency with PCs; good command of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FileMaker Pro, e-mail and Internet.
