The Associate Dean for Student Affairs is a senior leadership position that oversees student affairs functions, including academic success programs, financial aid services, student wellness initiatives, career counseling, and academic advising. The role provides strategic leadership to promote student development, academic achievement, well-being, and an enhanced educational experience for medical students at UGA SOM. It supports recruitment, matriculation, retention, and graduation of medical students. The role reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and collaborates with campus leadership, faculty, and the UGA Office of Student Affairs. The position is non-tenure track and may be at the rank of clinical assistant, clinical associate, or full clinical professor, commensurate with experience. Responsibilities
Student Support & Advocacy: Serve as the primary advocate for students, address their needs and concerns, and provide guidance on academic, personal, and professional matters. Student Wellness & Well-Being: Develop and oversee wellness initiatives; collaborate with campus resources to provide counseling and health services; promote fairness and inclusivity. Student Leadership & Professional Development: Oversee involvement in professional organizations, leadership opportunities, research, advocacy, and medical education. Student Engagement & Activities: Supervise student organizations; organize orientation, career development workshops, and graduation activities. Academic & Career Support: Collaborate with deans and faculty to align student affairs with educational goals; oversee residency guidance and the Academic Success Program. Financial Aid Oversight: Ensure compliance and oversee awarding processes; promote financial wellness and responsible debt management. Compliance & Accreditation: Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and lead quality improvement for student services. Leadership: Participate on the SOM Senior Leadership Team; supervise the Assistant Deans and related staff; support Student Government and Honor Council. Other Duties: Contribute to teaching, scholarship, and service; fulfill other duties as assigned. Qualifications & Experience
A minimum of five years experience in student affairs or a similar role in higher education, preferably within a medical school or health sciences. Physicians in the School of Medicine are expected to maintain an active Georgia state medical license, board certification, and/or DEA license as required for credentials or patient care. Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Understanding of medical education, student wellness, and professional development. Knowledge of NRMP, ERAS, MSPE, and LCME guidelines; familiarity with residency program requirements. Supervisory and management experience; ability to foster an inclusive environment for diverse students. Excellent communication, teaching skills, and ability to work with minimal supervision; handling confidential information professionally. Additional Information
