Job Description Summary The Physician/Scientist I will lead efforts for Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (“SRAlab”) to develop a high-quality, nationally recognized research program in the area of their PhD training (the “Program”). In support of the Program, the Physician/Scientist I will conduct this research utilizing state-of-the art technologies appropriate to their field. The Physician/Scientist I is expected to develop novel projects and obtain their own extramural grants in the areas of the Program. The Physician/Scientist I will direct their laboratory and will be provided with lab space, staff members, and a supportive team environment. The person is expected to expand their own team of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and staff within the framework of SRAlab and NU. The person will have the opportunity to mentor graduate students, laboratory members, and other scientists. There is opportunity to teach lectures, a class or co-teach classes. They will also have major influence at the laboratory level. The Physician/Scientist I is also responsible for providing high quality patient care to inpatient and outpatients as assigned and will function as a faculty member of the Northwestern University Medical School. Job Description The Physician/Scientist I: Assists with development of scientific goals and objectives for research progress in the Program. Defines, develops and modifies aspects of the program of research as it is expressed in specific projects. Develops research proposals for submission to funding agencies and prepares grant applications for foundations, intramural research grants, mentored grants, and other small grants for which they will serve as Principal Investigator, in order to secure funding for research. Participates in medical education activities, including teaching medical students and residents, grand rounds, continuing education programs and in-service training programs. Serves as a practicing physician and provides medical leadership to the interdisciplinary team. In the role of a practicing physician, ensures the appropriateness and effectiveness of the treatment plan.Oversees and coordinates the involvement of physicians, nursing and allied health staff to resolve complex medical problems. Actively participates in assigned medical staff committees including providing leadership by functioning as chairperson as appropriate. May serve on ad hoc institutional committees. Conducts clinical activity consistent with assigned clinical FTE. Takes on clinical volumes consistent with core clinical expectations. Participates in research activities for funded and non-funded projects. Other Responsibilities Creates and implements short-and long-term plans to apply modern technology to problems related to the Program in order to obtain research funding. Writes necessary progress reports and annual reports to communicate with funding agencies. Consults with investigators, residents, clinicians and clinical fellows regarding research design, measurement issues and statistical analyses related to the Program. Writes research reports, develops presentation proposals, and presents at regional and national meetings. Prepares and submits original research articles for publication in scientific journals Provides formal lectures and participates in and conducts departmental in-service programs.Serves as faculty on measurement topics in the Northwestern Medical School’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Resident Research Program and lecturer at SRAlab’s Academy. Manages segments of the unit’s human resources, which includes supervision, direction, and development of professional and nonprofessional staff. Keeps informed of developments in measurement and statistics to maintain and enhance professional expertise. Acquires and maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in rehabilitation research. Participates in scientific review of journal articles or grants with assistance from senior colleagues. Mentors students and laboratory members along with other scientists. May have Ph.D. student(s) in lab. May develop collaborations outside of the laboratory. Learns and understands the process of technology transfer and development of intellectual property. Influences activities within own laboratory Experiences relevant outpatient clinics and huddles based on scientific expertise. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of SRAlab. Reporting Relationships Reports directly to the Chief Scientific Officer Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Typically requires a Ph.D. from an accredited University in relevant discipline and licensed to practice medicine in the State of Illinois. Successful completion of a residency program in physical medicine and rehabilitation and is Board Certified or Board Eligible. Faculty appointment at Northwestern University Medical School. Knowledge of experimental design, advanced literature searching methods, advanced statistical analysis, and knowledge of various grant mechanisms normally acquired through a Ph.D. from an accredited school and successful completion of a postdoctoral fellowship. Requires a high level of proficiency and knowledge in technical and strategic aspects of the Program.Considered to be a “trainee” position. Requires a high level of analytical ability to design and conduct research projects. Requires a high level of proficiency in writing to prepare grant proposals, research reports and other publications, and explain complex results to a lay audience. Interpersonal skills needed in order to supervise subordinates and communicate effectively with other staff members, fellow researchers, and the like. Excellent communications and interdisciplinary skills required, including proven ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, referring parties, SRAlab and other internal and external stakeholders. Working Conditions Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
