Truck Driver (Transportation)
Overview
Ford County. Truck Driver. Reports To: Road or Bridge Foreman. Job Status: Full-time. Travel: Constant in county, occasional out-of-county travel. Work Schedule: 40 hours/week with some training out of county; some extended hours may be required Monday-Friday with a 1/2 hour lunch break.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Foreman, the Truck Driver performs routine manual work in the operation of dump trucks and semi-trucks for transporting personnel, materials, and equipment. In addition to safely and efficiently operating vehicles, this employee performs related manual work in loading or handling materials as needed. Close supervision in the form of specific assignments or schedules is received from a superior. A limited amount of road and bridge maintenance work is required.
Essential Functions
- Pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screen and participate in a random drug/alcohol program.
- Possess a valid Kansas Class A Drivers License.
- Inspect the condition of all vehicles and equipment.
- Operate a motor vehicle such as a dump truck, semi-truck, or pickup truck in the transportation of personnel or materials.
- Perform vehicle maintenance activities.
- Operate move trucks and other related vehicles.
- Assist in the patchwork of county roads and bridges.
- Load materials and perform work-related manual tasks as required.
- Assist in spreading sand on county roads and general maintenance of county roads.
- Complete paperwork concerning work assignments and material hauled.
- Assist in the installation of signs and the removal of snow in winter months.
Marginal/Additional Functions
- Assist other divisions and departments with special projects as requested.
- Perform other related duties as necessary or required.

- Skills & Abilities
- Experience: One to three years of truck driving experience. Responsibilities and duties are expected to be acquired within six months to one year.
- Education: High School diploma or GED preferred.
- Skills: Knowledge of equipment maintenance. Ability to operate a truck, semi-truck, and other light maintenance vehicles and equipment.
- Problem Solving: Maintaining equipment operation and determining proper speed for road conditions and hazards.
- Decision Making: Limited decision making in task performance.
- Accountability: Not responsible for budgetary control; no participation in annual department budget.
- Supervision: Limited supervision; job assignments reviewed by supervisor; no supervisory responsibilities.
- Personal Relations: Occasional contact with other county departments and the public; constant contact within crew.
- Working Conditions: Manual labor and physical effort required; extreme weather conditions may be factors.
