Overview

Performs manual labor and semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of County grounds and facilities. Maintains athletic fields by cutting grass, dragging fields, and lining fields. Serves as a lead worker when needed for new hires and seasonal employees. Operates light machinery and uses hand tools to prune trees, mow lawns, remove snow, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual labor and semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of County grounds and facilities.
  • Maintain athletic fields by cutting grass, dragging fields, and lining fields.
  • Serve as a lead worker when needed for new hires and seasonal employees.
  • Operate light machinery and use hand tools to prune trees, mow lawns, and remove snow.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent and 1-2 years experience in landscape maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with good driving record mandatory.
  • Certification as a State Category 60 Registered Technician for pesticide application required, or must have the ability to obtain such certification with 6 months of employment.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Requires an acceptable criminal background check.
  • Work is performed outdoors and along County roadways and beautification corridors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to the usual hazards associated with outside maintenance and construction work.
  • This position is considered an Essential Position (County designation as ALPHA) which requires the employee to report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions, often outside normally scheduled work hours, or as notified by a supervisor.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including lawn mowers, weed eaters, chippers, edgers, chainsaws, hand tools, shovels, hoes, rakes, pruning equipment, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Much of the work involves heavy lifting and carrying of materials, bending, stooping, standing, and walking while doing the groundskeeping and construction activities.
