Overview
Under general supervision, performs the full range of professional level accounting tasks and duties assigned to classes within the Accountant series including maintaining, developing and analyzing fiscal statements and records; prepares financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Governmental Accounting Standards; performs other related duties as required.
Primary Responsibilities
The Accountant II is the full journey level class in the professional Accountant series. An Accountant II is expected to perform the full range of professional accounting work including the more complex and technical accounting functions. Incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of governmental accounting systems and procedures. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Accountant I by the performance of the more complex accounting functions including detailed federal and state reporting requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field; and
- At least two (2) years of full time professional accounting work experience equivalent to Accountant I with the City of Madera; and
- A valid Class C California driver’s license or equivalent issued by a government agency
Additional Information
Only those applicants who meet the qualification standards of this position by the application filing deadline will be allowed to participate in the examination process. Examination scores determine standing on Civil Service eligibility lists. The City Manager, upon recommendation of the department head, will make the final selection and appointment from the established eligibility list. The examination process may consist of the following parts: Application Package Review; Oral Interview with 100% weight value. Candidates must earn a score of 70% or higher to be considered for the eligibility list. Applicants who require special examination accommodations due to a disability should contact the Human Resources Department five (5) business days prior to any scheduled examination. Applicants may be eligible for Veteran’s Preference Points and should attach a DD214 to their employment application for consideration of this preference.
Longevity
Mid Management employees are eligible for Longevity Pay, up to 7.5%, based on continuous full-time City service.

Retention Bonus
Employees will receive a $1,500 lump sum Retention Bonus in January 2026 and January 2027.
Health Insurance
The City contributes a monthly amount for employee health, dental and vision coverage. Medical coverage is through Anthem and Kaiser; dental through Delta Dental; vision through Superior. The City’s contribution covers 100% of the health, dental, and vision premium for the employee and family on both the Anthem and Kaiser Core Plans.
Paid Leave
The City of Madera offers a paid leave program including paid holidays, sick leave, administrative leave, and vacation. Holiday Closure without loss of pay between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Deferred Compensation
The City offers a paid/vested contribution of 4.2% of base pay to one of two 457 plans. The employee may also contribute.
Education Reimbursement and Incentive Pays
Up to $2,400/year reimbursement for college coursework. Incentive pays: 5% for a Bachelor's degree when not a qualifying requirement of the job description; 5% for Master’s Degree; 7% for Doctorate Degree.
Bilingual Incentive
English/Spanish for qualifying individuals after passing annual bilingual test.
Retirement
The City participates in the CalPERS defined benefit retirement system with Classic, Tier I, and New Member formulas as defined by CalPERS. Details are provided by the City.
