Qualifications
Minimum of 30 year(s) of experience in Geology / Hydrology OR PhD Degree in Geology / Hydrology OR Previously completed training in MODFLOW, SUTRA, Geolog, and other related modeling tools and techniques
Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams, MS Outlook

Duties
The candidate will serve as a senior hydrologist developing groundwater models and providing technical guidance on groundwater systems across Hawaii and the US Affiliated Pacific Island (USAPI). This position combines mentoring junior staff in Pacific Island hydrogeology with stakeholder coordination and technical review responsibilities. This groundwater monitoring specialist position is designed to strengthen the Pacific Island Water Science Center's capacity for freshwater lens characterization and protection in tropical island environments. The role addresses critical water security challenges unique to island communities, where freshwater resources exist as thin lenses floating above saltwater in highly permeable coral and volcanic aquifers.
Mentoring and staff development. The candidate will mentor junior staff in Pacific island hydrogeology principles and provide guidance to the Studies Sections. This includes training staff on Hawaiian volcanic aquifer systems and USAPI atoll environments while developing technical competencies in groundwater modeling across the region.30%
Groundwater modeling and analysis - The candidate will develop groundwater models using MODFLOW and SUTRA to support water availability and security assessments across Hawaii and USAPI island systems. This includes modeling freshwater lens dynamics for island and atoll environments, contributing to water budget analyses for regional aquifer systems, and creating groundwater monitoring and data visualization tools to support water resource management decisions.30%
Stakeholder advisory and technical reviewer - The candidate will coordinate with local water utilities, government agencies, and entities across Hawaii and USAPI while reviewing data releases, scientific reports, and groundwater studies. This role includes presenting findings at scientific conferences, developing standardized regional procedures, and ensuring technical reviews adhere to professional standards.20%
Scientific Publication and Data Release - The candidate will contribute to USGS Scientific Investigation Reports documenting groundwater modeling results and hydrogeologic assessments across Hawaii and USAPI20%
