Summary of Position (Job Purpose)
- Major purpose and functions of the position.
Responsible for leading the development, maintenance, and refinement of transportation financial plans, forecasts, and systems, with a major focus on transportation costs and service optimization.
Oversees the planning and execution of transportation systems, routes, and payment. Conducting comprehensive assessments, identifying areas for improvement, and developing long-term plans that align with the organization's goals.
Develops processes and policies to ensure transportation operations meet business objectives, customer expectations, and market trends.
Build and maintain carrier relationships to ensure capacity, compliance, and competitive rates.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The primary tasks the associate will perform during his/her work schedule
Effectively develop, communicate and implement domestic outbound transportation strategies, programs, procedures and policies.
Provide strategic thinking, planning and direction of the transportation department to transform solutions to stay ahead of the company's business needs as communicated from business partners
Continuously research emerging and existing supply chain strategies for incorporation into current operational processes
Collaborate with Distribution, Replenishment/Allocations, Store Operations and Merchandising, Legal, Finance, and IT to meet or exceed all business requirements in a timely, efficient and cost effective manner
Deliver solid operational results, continuously reducing cost to serve and initiate improvement initiatives as needed.
Ensure the proper level of aligned communication and customer service response by the team to all customers
Support operational disaster recovery to ensure business continuity including team preparedness and commodity execution
Support execution of a robust backhaul program
Establish and oversee holistic carrier relationships to ensure that Family Dollar receives optimal service at a competitive cost; negotiating and providing guidance to contract rates, mode consumption and timing of bid cycles
Define, support and enforce carrier compliance through robust analysis and partnerships. Ensure operational consistency, efficiency, and excellence across all Distribution Centers
Lead budget development and budget reporting, to include the monthly/quarterly P&L
Direct finance to determine project ROI's and budget; ensuring operational strategies and activities occur within the bounds of the annual and monthly budget and reforecast
Facilitate processes to support, audit and execute carrier payment to contract terms
Administer systems and tools, up to and including OTM, RoutePro and Four Kites
Motivate and inspire team members for optimal performance and execution, including establishment of proper priorities, coaching and discipline
Recruit, hire and train team members to a standard
Administer routine performance evaluations, providing routine coaching and development. Fostering a culture of empowerment, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Complete other various assignments, as required
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications
- Summary of knowledge, experience and education required.
Bachelor's degree with a major in logistics, finance, accounting preferred or equivalent work experience
10+ years of transportation, logistics or distribution related work experience
Comprehensive knowledge of the domestic transportation industry and all modes, truckload, dedicated, LTL, rail, small package, air
Five years of rate and contract negotiations experience across domestic transportation modes
Thorough knowledge of North American transportation costing and routing principles
Strong analytical, strategic planning and execution skills
Results driven with a successful track record of removing obstacles to implement positive change
Experience with developing and managing a multi-million dollar transportation budget, staff and projects
Proven team player, valuing diversity with a leadership style that empowers, coaches, mentors, and fosters a cohesive team environment
Successfully exhibit the ability to manage change and the ambiguity that accompanies change
Willingness to continue to develop self, is emotionally intelligent, is focused on continuous improvement and seeks feedback and personal growth opportunities
Strong working knowledge of MS Office, to include Outlook and Excel
Robust written and verbal communication skills, to include the ability to effectively present complex information to diverse audiences
