Department Bio

The mission of the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service is to integrate civic engagement into George Washington University's educational work. We promote equity and active citizenship in a diverse democracy, focus GW's resources to address community needs through reciprocal partnerships beyond the campus, and enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship at GW.

Position Specific Summary

This position is for the 2025 - 2026 academic year and will begin in August. GW engageDC Leaders will be matched directly with a community partner organization to serve as the primary GW liaison with the site. This involves but is not limited to developing a working knowledge of the mission, structure, and needs of the partner, supporting the recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing development of GW participants and volunteers involved in GW engageDC and other GW programs assigned to your partner organization and completing regular progress reports. This position requires spending a significant amount of time weekly off-campus at the community organization and facilitating meetings and training sessions for GW participants, as well as working as a team with other GW engageDC leaders. The average leader works 6-8 hours per week.

Standard Position Description

Students work with community organizations in the District of Columbia to address issues that build the organization's capacity, expand the mission or address infrastructure issues, such as program evaluation, volunteer management, web design, or developing new program areas. Students serve a full academic year and gain perspective through leadership development and build a diverse network at GW and beyond campus committed to social justice. Students serve as a team leader for other GW participants at their assigned community organization and provide coaching, support, and training. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific to the department or community site.

Required Qualifications

Some applicable educational, technical, or professional experience required, some training will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as a participant or site leader in engageDC or SMARTDC, preferably working with the community partner where you are applying to serve as a site leader.
