Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

Position Overview: We are seeking a hands-on Controller to manage day-to-day financial and accounting operations for our diversified real estate investment group, encompassing multi-family, brokerage, land development, commercial real estate, and private investments. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in real estate accounting, partnership structures, and multi-entity financial reporting. The Controller will also support insurance and risk management initiatives, working closely with the Head of Networks and IT to ensure proper integration of technology platforms within the finance and accounting departments.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Accounting: • Oversee daily accounting operations across all entities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting. • Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes for multiple business lines. • Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and partnership distributions. • Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance. • Coordinate with external CPA firms for audit preparation and tax compliance. • Implement and maintain standardized accounting procedures and internal controls. • Review and approve work performed by outsourced accounting teams to maintain consistency and accuracy across all properties. • Establish performance metrics and service level agreements for outsourced accounting operations. • Conduct regular assessments of outsourced accounting providers and recommend improvements or changes as needed.

Partnership & Investment Accounting: • Manage complex partnership accounting including capital calls, distributions, and allocations. • Prepare investor reporting packages and partnership tax returns (K-1s). • Track and report on investment performance metrics and portfolio analysis. • Support transaction teams with deal accounting setup and ongoing financial reporting. • Maintain detailed records of partnership agreements and investment structures.

Property & Asset Accounting: • Oversee property-level financial reporting and budget variance analysis. • Manage capital improvement project accounting and draw processes. • Coordinate with Property Management teams on rent rolls, operating expenses, and CAM reconciliations. • Ensure proper classification and depreciation of real estate assets. • Support asset management with financial analysis and performance reporting.

Technology & Systems Management: • Work with the Head of Networks and IT to maintain and optimize accounting software and horizontal platforms that work into your day to day. • Oversee integration between accounting, property management, and transaction systems. • Support implementation of new technology solutions to improve efficiency. • Ensure data integrity and security across financial systems. • Train accounting team members on system updates and new technologies.

Risk Management and Contract Support: • Lead the company's risk management program including corporate and property insurance administration. • Work with department heads to development risk management policies and procedures across different divisions. • Oversee insurance certificate tracking, lender requirements, and maintain comprehensive insurance documentation for all entities and properties. • Partner with department heads on contract administration and proper accounting and approval of such contracts.

Team Leadership & Development: • Manage and mentor accounting staff and bookkeepers. • Provide training and development opportunities for team members. • Foster collaboration with other departments including brokerage, development, and property management. • Support CFO with special projects and strategic initiatives. • Maintain relationships with external accounting firms and service providers.

Required Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; CPA designation preferred. • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in accounting and finance, preferably within the real estate industry. • Strong understanding of partnership accounting and real estate investment structures. • Experience with real estate financial reporting and multi-entity accounting. • Knowledge of real estate tax strategies and compliance requirements. • Proficiency in real estate accounting software and advanced Excel skills. • Experience working with external CPA firms and audit processes. • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership abilities. • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.

Technical Knowledge: • Solid understanding of multi-family, commercial real estate, and development accounting. • Knowledge of partnership and real estate tax regulations. • Proficiency in real estate accounting systems (e.g., Appfolio, Yardi, MRI). • Strong financial analysis and reporting capabilities. • Understanding of debt and equity structures. • Experience with brokerage accounting and commission tracking. • Knowledge of internal controls and compliance procedures. • Basic understanding of data security and privacy requirements.
