Examples of Duties
Under general supervision, installs and repairs locks and makes keys.
Essential Job Duties
Installs and repairs electric and electronic jail level cell block devices and all high security and standard commercial locking hardware on doors, safes, desks, filing cabinets. Opens and repairs locks on a variety of files, safes, and doors throughout the County. Inspects locksmithing and related work performed by others. Changes safe combinations either by hand or by key. Evaluates security of buildings and makes recommendations for proper locks and alarms. Develops, installs, and maintains master keying systems in buildings. Makes keys by duplication, code, and impression. Maintains adequate inventory of tools and materials. Drives a light truck to transport tools and materials. Ensures that vehicle is properly inspected and maintained. Examples of Other Duties
Prepares reports of time and materials used. Requisitions and purchases tools, equipment and materials. May lead or train employees less experienced in locksmithing. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications
Required Qualifications Four years' experience in the installation, repair, modification, and making of locks and keys. (Related training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience.)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level)
Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials, techniques, and equipment of locksmithing. Knowledge of effective security mechanisms. Knowledge of electric locking systems. Skill in the proper uses of tools and equipment of locksmithing. Skill in making keys from copies or code. Ability to repair, replace, or modify electric and electronic jail locking mechanisms. Ability to interpret blueprints and sketches. Ability to keep technical records and files.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Full Performance)
Thorough knowledge of the locks and locking mechanisms used in County buildings, safes, desks, and file cabinets. Thorough knowledge of County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing performance of duties. Knowledge of Life Safety codes and ADA codes as pertains to the performance of duties. Skill in the repair, replacement, and modification of electric and electronic jail locking mechanisms. Skill in the repair, replacement, and installation of all other County locking mechanisms. Skill in fabricating parts and recycling locks and door hardware. Ability to lead and instruct others in locksmithing techniques. Ability to recommend appropriate security mechanisms.
Licenses and Certificates Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
