The Position

Do you possess a love for reading and aspire to share that enthusiasm with the youth in our community? The Ontario City Library has an excellent part-time opportunity for a self-motivated and detail-oriented individual interested in gaining valuable experience assisting with youth tutoring, literacy programs and teaching initiatives. As the Library Intern, your primary duties will involve leading literacy programs and activities for elementary-aged youths along with a wide variety of administrative and technical assignments in support of the Library. This position will focus on teaching and supporting youths in various literacy programs and assist in developing workshops designed to ignite a passion for learning among our younger library patrons and create an environment where elementary- aged youths feel encouraged to explore their potential and gain valuable reading skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in education, literacy, and tutoring elementary- aged youths; previous experience working with youths in educational settings, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with youths; enthusiasm in engaging youths in learning activities; excellent written and verbal skills; organizational skills with attention to detail; and will be passionate about making a difference in the community's youth.

The Administrative Intern is a part-time/temporary position, scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week or 990 hours per year, and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans. As with any internship experience, individuals with a desire to learn as much as possible from experienced employees will have the greatest benefit from their internship experience. Employment in this classification is seasonal/temporary and will conclude at the end of the current fiscal year, or at the discretion of the department.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Library Intern include the following:

Plans, prepares and presents tutoring services for elementary school students. Administers literacy assessments for children and maintains records of student progress. Assists with the preparation, administration and reporting of public surveys. Assists with organizing and presenting workshops for youths. Assists in the development of educational materials and resources for youth programs. Assists members of management, professional and technical staff by performing a variety of administrative, and technical projects and assignments. Assists staff with phones and responds to inquiries from the public. Operates personal computers, printers, and other office equipment. Engages with the public to promote library services. Maintains the confidentiality of library customer's personal information. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualification Guidelines

Education

Equivalent to completion of two years of college with major course work in Education, English, Library Science, or a closely related field.

Licenses

Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment are required.

Desirable

Interest in pursuing a career in the field of Elementary Education or Library Services. Experience working with youth. Experience tutoring youth. Previous work or internship experience with a local, county, or other government agency. Bilingual in Spanish.

Special Requirements

Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary. Ability to travel to various locations within the city of Ontario. Supplemental Information
