Overview
This position performs journeyman-level installation, maintenance and repair, and preventive maintenance of electrical systems throughout the Dayton VA Medical Center and is located within the Engineering Service under the supervision of the Electrical Maintenance Unit Supervisor.
Major Duties
Incumbent will conduct the following: maintain, repair, install and test switchgear, automatic transfer switches, transformers, switchboard meters, motor control centers, regulators and reactors; maintain, repair, test and install electrical motors, generators, alternators, industrial storage batteries and hydraulic and pneumatic electrical control systems; install, maintain and calibrate industrial instrumentation and related devices; install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, test, and load new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Examples include secondary power distribution lines and circuits to supply various voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements, distribution panels, switchgear, power and control circuits, industrial multiphase systems, thermocouple sensors, emergency warning systems, lighting protection systems, high intensity lighting systems with related controls, AC and DC rectification systems, amplifier circuits, and related electrical equipment.
Incumbent: installs electrical conduits for new equipment or for movement or replacement of existing machinery and equipment. This includes laying out the job, cutting and threading conduit, mounting outlet boxes, starters, fuse panels and switches, pulling wire through conduit with correct color and number of wires, installing conduit, thin wall and wire-ways through walls and floors made of concrete, brick, tile and wood; installs signal systems such as buzzers; hangs fixtures and lights (fluorescent, spotlights, dental lights, operating lights and fixtures on the Center); pulls wire in underground duct for fire alarm; installs motors, exhaust fans, electric dryers, electric washers, and other equipment; installs and repairs cables, conduits, lights and hangers in the tunnel when necessary. Responds to trouble calls regarding blown fuses, broken switches, grounded and shorted circuits, and makes necessary repairs; repairs motors and appliances such as fans, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, coffee urns, etc.; replaces brushes, worn bearings, heat elements, etc., as necessary.
Incumbent: repairs fixed equipment in the various buildings and shops, such as laundry washers, extractors, dryers, electric saws, drill presses, blowers, and similar equipment; checks contacts on manual starting switches as well as automatic switches, replacing coils, heaters, relays, movable and stationary contacts, etc., as needed; performs preventive maintenance by oiling and lubricating motors, cleaning transformer rooms, checking and filling the fire alarm batteries, checking fire alarm system for grounds and voltage, etc; troubleshoots, repairs and installs 480 volt street lighting circuits, including splicing cables and re-setting or setting street light posts and re-lamping; conducts preventive maintenance programs and keeps maintenance records; works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, electrical code specifications, etc.

Installs, maintains, and calibrates industrial instrumentation and related devices.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Physical Requirements: Works on ladders, scaffolding and platforms, often in difficult hard-to-reach places. Duties require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts, carries, and sets up tools and equipment often weighing 50 pounds. Works inside and outside, in all types of weather, often under dirty, dusty and greasy working conditions. Occasionally subjected to high noise levels. May work in and around patient care areas requiring discretion, tact and diplomacy. Subjected to all hazards associated with the electrical trade.
