Overview

This position is located within the Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System, Electric Control/Repair Shop, Engineering Service. The position is on a recall basis and is responsible for the safe operation of the facility emergency generator, electric and elevator controls, and Automatic Transfer Switches. Primary purpose of the position is utilizing a specialized knowledge and skill to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical control systems and components.

Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of various electrical systems, circuits, equipment and control installation, composition, operation and inter-relationships, e.g.; wiring systems, power/control circuits, distribution panels, etc.; various equipment, gauges, sizes and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers, electrical supplies/devices; ability to integrate systems and equipment maintained to ensure proper and safe operation.
  • Knowledge of construction, function, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance procedures for elevator operational systems (moderate to high speed), dumbwaiter, leveling ramp and associated equipment to solve operating problems; includes system components and electronic control circuits and components.
  • Knowledge of electrical principles, theories, methods, procedures and system operations; design, principles, and operating characteristics of varied electrical, mechanical, office, medical, industrial and hospital equipment; maintenance/service practices of elevator systems, dumbwaiter and related components.
  • Determines, arranges, places and routes distribution panels, boxes, circuits, fittings, connections, and controls for electrical device installations.
  • Ability to interpret manufacturer parts, catalogs and repair manuals to trace circuits, replace/fabricate parts and complete repairs; use test equipment to check circuits/components and precision measuring devices.
  • Plan and carry out troubleshooting, aligning/balancing control networks, adjusting safety devices, repairing/servicing electromechanical parts and equipment; dismantle operational assemblies.
  • Installs, tests, troubleshoots, modifies, connects, repairs, and maintains the Medical Center’s high voltage underground primary electrical distribution systems.
  • Maintains complex fire alarm systems including annunciation and monitoring of devices (smoke detectors, fire sprinklers, pull boxes).
  • Cleans, adjusts, and repairs electrical equipment; installs conduits; pulls conductors; connects and tests electrical systems.
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, loads, and tests secondary electrical systems and circuits.
  • Installs new pull stations, flow switches, smoke detectors, heat detectors, and tamper switches.
  • Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings in planning layouts.
  • Uses varied hand/power tools and electrical/elevator system test equipment.
  • Plans and lays out complex work, sequences, and selects tools/materials to complete assignments; ensures proper use and safekeeping of tools, materials and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots hard-to-locate defects and completes repairs with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements

Work requires light to moderately heavy physical effort (lifting 0-75 lbs) while lifting, carrying, pulling, standing, kneeling, crouching, stooping, bending, climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, elevated platforms, or in cramped spaces. May require working at heights and in confined spaces while using tools and equipment.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the work. Applicants will be rated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Qualifications will be evaluated against the screen-out element (often question 1 in the online questionnaire). Those with at least minimally acceptable qualifications are considered for further rating; others are ineligible.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Current Journeyman’s license with 5 years of experience is preferred but not required.

Education: There is no educational substitution for this grade level.
