Apply now! Seeking highly skilled professionals with extensive background in engineering and licensed as a Professional Engineer or Engineer Intern. Job summary: This is inspection, administrative, and supervisory work in securing compliance with the city building regulations, codes, and ordinances. An employee in this class is responsible for compliance in the inspection of buildings, structures, and premises for conformance with building code, for assigning and reviewing the work of other building inspectors, and for reviewing structural plans. Work requires the use of technical knowledge and discretion in reviewing plans for and inspecting a variety of projects. Unusual or difficult technical and enforcement problems are reviewed with the Chief Building Official, who also reviews periodic inspection reports and work when necessary. Essential job functions and responsibilities: Supervises employees and inspects buildings in the process of construction for compliance with building code requirements; inspects sites before construction for practicability of plans. Supervises and coordinates inspections for alteration and repair jobs by checking sites, existing buildings, and work in process; examines plans submitted with permit applications for conformance with building requirements. Receives applications and plans, checks structural features of plans, answers inquiries concerning building code requirements. Prepares reports of building inspections and investigations; recommends interpretations of any revisions to building regulations; trains new building inspectors. Attends seminars and training courses to stay informed on new developments in the related field and to obtain current information of code changes. Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation. Must establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, and managers. Performs related work as required for this position description only. The requirements: Education/experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license. Must be certified as required by the State of Florida, BCAIB as a Structural Plans Examiner and as a Structural Inspector. Architects and Engineers are exempt from BCAIB only. Must be certified by Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals and meet at least one of the following qualifications: An Architect or an Engineer in the discipline requested and having practiced within the HVHZ for at least three (3) years, and two (2) years as a Structural Inspector; Or Ten (10) years experience as a licensed General Contractor (Unlimited), five (5) years of which shall have been construction experience in the Structural discipline within the HVHZ, and two (2) years as a Structural Inspector within the HVHZ; Or Five (5) years experience in the State of Florida Structural Plans Examiner or Structural Inspector, three (3) years of construction experience in the Structural discipline, which shall have been within the HVHZ and certified by the BCAIB. Certificates, licenses, registrations: State General Contractors License State and County Building Inspector License State and County Building Plans Examiner License Valid Driver's License: With proof of automobile insurance Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record Knowledge, skills, abilities: Knowledge of building construction work, including building inspection work. Knowledge of all types of building construction materials and methods, and of stages of construction when possible violations and defects may most easily be observed and corrected. Knowledge of city and building codes and related laws and ordinances. Ability to detect structural and other faults and to appraise for quality of construction and physical depreciation. Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blue-prints quickly and accurately and to compare them with construction in process. Ability to consult with and enlist the cooperation of building owners, contractors, and the public and to establish effective working relationships with builders and their representatives. Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers, and the public. Physical demands: The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, write, hear, speak and be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. May require the use of fingers or hands to manipulate objects such as picking, gripping, or pressing. Work environment: When reviewing plans, work involves sedentary to light physical activity work in an office setting.
