Communications Director Position at a glance Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI) is searching for a Communications Director who is highly motivated to work in a member-driven organization that advances a people and planet first agenda. Iowa CCI’s office is located in Des Moines, IA. The Communications Director would be expected to live in or near Des Moines and work out of our Des Moines Office. This is a full-time position with benefits. The starting date is early to mid-November 2025. Since 1975, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI) has been organizing to build the power of everyday people in Iowa’s rural towns and big cities. We believe everyday people, working together, can be a powerful force for justice. Our members are united in the belief that Iowans deserve policies and an economy that serve the common good, rather than corporations and the wealthy few. We believe that community organizing is the most effective means for engaging people in true democracy to bring about broad, progressive social change.We want to make our communities more just, more humane, more democratic – and we want to make life better for a lot more people.Our current organizing campaigns focus on a broad range of economic, racial, environmental, and political justice issues. Together, we work to put People and Planet First. Our 3,000+ dues-paying members across the state believe you don’t have to stand by and just let things happen. We believe in getting things done that put people before profits and communities before corporations. We view this troubling time as a clear call to action and an opportunity to build political power to shape the Iowa we want and need. Overview of the Communications Director’s role The communications director is responsible for leading the development and implementation of an integrated communications program that expands CCI’s visibility and stature and frames our issues in ways that resonate with and motivate people. Primary responsibilities include: Lead the on-going development and implementation of a communications strategic direction plan that is the foundation for on-going work Work closely with lead staff to fully integrate a strategic communications mindset into program activities Provide leadership on approaches that help expand CCI’s visibility and presence throughout the state and that amplify our messages and positions Work with staff to develop messages and narratives that resonate with CCI’s base and beyond Train staff and members on how to talk with the press and how to create content for different media platforms Making sure CCI is creating impactful messaging that expands CCI’s base, elevates CCI’s profile, shifts the dominant narrative, and advances CCI’s issues and campaigns Core Duties and Responsibilities Work closely with the executive director, staff, and members to integrate effective communications strategies into all areas of CCI’s work Act as a strategic thought partner to staff on integrating communications strategies into their on-going work Oversee execution of communications activities Proactively monitor press, develop a deep understanding of the traditional media landscape in Iowa, and cultivate relationships with journalists Create content for social media platforms (with input from staff) The Essentials Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written Interest in people and good at interacting with them Excellent knowledge of and skills working with journalists and with navigating the earned media environment to increase CCI’s presence Proactive about garnering press and cultivating relationships that lead to increased coverage of CCI and our positions Excellent skills at developing messages that are clear, easy to remember, and inspiring Knowledgeable and comfortable with social media platforms, able to create content that is specific and effective for each platform Excellent at synthesizing information, connecting the dots and communicating in straightforward, non-jargony language Skilled at developing and leading trainings for CCI staff and members Self-identified media junkie—both traditional and social media; extremely knowledgeable about current news and trends, and what is actually meaningful Ability to work with others in a highly collaborative and respectful manner Ability to develop a high-level strategic approach to the work along with the ability to develop very specific and detailed workplans and timelines Highly detail-oriented Extremely organized and goal-oriented Excellent skills at prioritization and follow-through Excellent ability to develop and complete goals on-time, and inspire others to as well High comfort level with databases along with an ability to use them strategically Ability to be flexible and agile when faced with changing context and conditions Ability to keep ‘eyes on the prize' Clear communicator with an ability to create messages that are audience-specific Driven and motivated Highly collaborative and able to work well as a member of a team Energetic and enthusiastic about the work in ways that inspire people to dig in and accomplish big things Able to bring out the best in staff and members combined with a commitment to helping staff learn and improve Appreciative of others’ efforts and thoughtful about providing positive feedback Able to provide direction and input in a way that is open, clear, thoughtful, and humble Able to course-correct when necessary, in a way that’s designed to advance the work Accountable, reliable and responsible Can deal effectively with both internal and external conflict in a way that is direct, objective, and does not invite conflict, nor does it avoid clearly laying out a position Creative Curious Good role model as demonstrated by excellent work practices Focused Accountable Reliable Humble Willing to learn Sense of fun and humor Good people skills—an understanding of people and what makes them tick Trustworthy Respectful Core Qualifications: Strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside the organization Ability to work with diverse people and organizations Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships grounded in trust and shared self-interest Demonstrated ability to lead and move people into action with excellent communication skills (written and oral) that influence and engage various audiences Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically and to construct, articulate, and implement an integrated strategic communications plan Minimum of 5 years of senior-level professional communications experience Experience supervising staff is strongly desired Flexible and adaptable leadership style Ability to work as a team leader and a team player who will productively engage with people in CCI’s universe—board, staff, and members High energy and passion for CCI’s mission is essential Strong organizational, time management, and tracking skills Ability to embrace and embody CCI’s values, principles and culture and provide everyday modeling of the behavior we believe in and stand for Compensation and Benefits: Union Position:
