Biospecimens and Genetics Data Manager

The UCSF Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is a dynamic multidisciplinary clinical research program investigating neurodegenerative diseases. Under the supervision of the MAC Genetics and Biospecimen Manager, the Biospecimen and Genetics Data Manager coordinates many aspects of the Genetics and Biospecimen program data needs. Key activities include routine research data management such as discrepancy management, manual data review, data cleaning, data transfers, data linking and merging, data analysis, generating metrics, reporting, and writing scripts to support this work. The role provides hands-on data management to fulfill data requests for research activities and implements common queries integrated with the center’s central query tool.
Responsibilities
Coordinate data needs for the Genetics and Biospecimen program under MAC guidance.
Perform discrepancy management, manual data review, data cleaning, and data transfers.
Perform data linking/merging, data analysis, generate metrics, and prepare reports.
Write scripts to support data management tasks and integrate queries with the center’s query tool.
Provide hands-on data management support to fulfill data set requests for research activities.
Support the Genetics and Biospecimen Program Manager in debugging data validation errors and improving data quality.
Automate processes to improve throughput and efficiency.
Collaborate in specimen transfers: query data repositories, coordinate with laboratory and biobank staff to create specimen manifests, track shipping, and confirm receipt; participate in returning results to the Memory and Aging Center.
Support data capture, data integration, results management, and reporting for more than 30 related specimen collection protocols across multiple laboratories.
Report to the Genetics and Biospecimen Program Manager for career development and domain-relevant work.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related area and minimum one year of experience or equivalent training.
Working knowledge of research function.
Working skills in systems programming, scripting, and statistical software packages.
Ability to analyze data and provide consultation; ability to communicate complex information clearly in writing and verbally.
Proven track record of managing and maintaining accurate data in a complex data environment.
Proficiency in statistical analysis, data transformation/linking, data systems programming, and/or data schema design and documentation.
Basic understanding of genetics and proteomics.
Knowledge of Freezerworks LIMS or a similar database.
Ability to multitask, stay organized, and work quickly in a dynamic environment with competing priorities.
Prior experience in a research environment, preferably in a wet lab or closely with one.
Excellent Excel and MS Office skills; knowledge of SQL.
Proficiency in a programming language (e.g., Python, R).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using web services to integrate with LIMS or other systems.
Experience with relational databases or tools to design queries and reports.
Minimum of 3 years of research or clinical data management experience.
Data consultation experience in a cross-functional, preferably academic research, environment.
Knowledge of HIPAA and best practices for securing protected health information.
